The Master Crown is an object that has appeared in several Kirby games, but first appeared in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It is a seemingly malevolent item that grants its user incredible powers, but can possess them if they cannot withstand its power. Magolor wanted this item to gain limitless power in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, although he later destroys it when he discovers it to be a domineering tyrannical being that twists his mind and forces him to destroy everything in existence.
Description[]
The crown has several forms it takes on throughout the game. The crown is fairly petite in by default, with a four-pronged spire with a cyan spherical gem inset in a crest at the front and a few spiky protrusions hanging down from its crest, but is seen changing shape to match its holder. In Extra mode when Landia wears the crown, its gem turns red. Team Kirby Clash gives it a spikier crest with a purple gem, and blue diamond-shaped gems are inserted into its prongs. On Parallel Landia's head, its appearance matches its original design, but it has a red gem and appears black.
When it is worn by Magolor himself, the crown takes on a larger, more intimidating appearance. Its central crest resembles an eye with rounded eyelashes that protrude outward and winglike designs to its left and right, and an extra auxiliary prong is given to the back. The spiky protrusions on the front become longer and resemble fingers, making it appear to grip Magolor. Occasionally, the crown wobbles back and forth of its own accord.
The crown's appearance when worn by Magolor Soul is more intimidating, giving it a smaller main spire, though several long tendrils emanate from the crown and wrap themselves around Magolor, and the wing-like designs surrounding its eye-esque gem grow to become wing-like protrusions. Its grip over the wearer is even more overt here, suggesting that it has finally dominated its wearer. In Extra Mode, the crown's coloration is much paler, and it has additional spikes and horns particularly on its tendrils and emanating from its crest and its gem is magenta. When Magolor Soul's health drops below half, its gem turns cyan.
When Magolor confront the crown at the finishing point of his journey in the Magolor Epilogue, the Master Crown possesses and mutates the Gem Apple at the Ethereal Altar. It transforms its host into a monstrous tree with a single yellow eye on the trunk, and two arge branches resembling Magolor Soul's wings can be seen protruding from the back, allowing the tree to fly. The tree's canopy resembles the runes on Magolor Soul's arms, and it possesses an array of roots that the Master Crown an use to attack. The crown itself is entwined across the tree's trunk, with tendrils forming part of the tree's arms.
Kirby series[]
Kirby's Return to Dreamland[]
The crown is seen resting on top of Landia's head when the group enter Halcandra via the Lor Starcutter. Upon defeat, Landia drops the crown. Magolor gets his hands on the crown and reveals that he wanted to steal the crown and that Landia was too strong for him, so he tricked Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee into defeating the dragon for him. He then tries to fly through a dimensional portal and take over Planet Popstar. He is defeated and the crown takes over his body, transforming it into some sort of grotesque version of his regular appearance. Eventually, the group defeat the crown and it is seemingly destroyed.
In the Nintendo Switch version of the game, there is another Extra Mode added where Magolor has to get his powers back and escape the dimension that Kirby ended up sending him to. After Magolor builds the Gem Apple at the Ethereal Altar, the Master Crown possesses the Crowned Doomer. It also appears as the final boss, attacking from the background. It has the following moves:
- Otherworldly Roots: The Master Crown creates 1-3 rifts, from which it sends its roots to strike the stage in various patterns. Each strike creates stars that Kirby can grab with his vacuum breath and throw back. At low health, the roots et larger and cover more area. Their tips can be attacked to deal damage to the crown.
- Forbidden Malus Pumila: Two large Gem Apple bombs drop down. They can be destroyed, but will blow up if they remain for too long. Their explosions can break through shields. Kirby can swallow them for the Bomb ability.
- Forbidden Grand Malus Pumila: At low health, a single large Gem Apple appears. It is tougher, and its explosion causes the music to lower in volume temporarily.
- Daphne's Scream: The Master Crown's eye shoots a laser that sweeps the ground, causing the entire floor to explode. The laser can break through shields, but Kirby can guard against the blast. Stars appear after the explosion in the True Arena and can be used as ammunition. This attack is based on the nymph Daphne, who gets turned into a tree to escape her lover.
- Dance of the Double-Edged Leaves: Spade-shaped leaves are fired toward the target in two groups. They can be swallowed for the Leaf ability.
- Wild Dance of the Double-Edged Leaves: When the Master Crown's health is low, the spade-shaped leaves have their number doubled.
- Waltz of the Double-Edged Leaves: Another variant used of the Dance of the Double-Edged Leaves attack involving the leaves being tossed toward the stage in a sweeping manner before bombarding the stage from above. This is similar ot he Energy Showers move that Galacta Knight can use un his battles.
- Seed Attack: Four small seeds drop from above, growing into narrow damaging vines shortly after they land. In the second phase, eight seeds are dropped. Marx can use this attack in his fights.
- Mistilteinn of Hatred and Obsession: The crown fires a spread of lasers that penetrate through shields and sweep across the stage at many angles. In the True Arena, the final wave releases stars that can be used as ammunition. This attack is only used at low health.
- Doomer Call: Doomers are called in from the rifts. These Doomers are tougher than their regular counterparts, but are worth many Magic Points if destroyed before they vanish. This attack is only used at low health.
- Return Without a Ruler: The Master Crown stomps down onto the stage, with its shadow appearing as a warning. After it crashes into the stage, it digs deeper after a few seconds. It can be directly attacked during this move. This attack is only used after the Master Crown has lost half its heath. The impact leaves behind stars in the True Arena.
After Magolor deals enough damage, he will find a sword and turn it into an Ultra Sword. Magolor then leaps at the crown to strike it down, gaining help from the player who must shake the Joy-Cons and/or waggle the Control Stick. If the player is too slow, Magolor will slip and take damage.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[]
In the Team Kirby Clash sub-game, Landia serves as an opponent and is still wearing the crown on his head.
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe[]
Like in Kirby: Planet Robobot, in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, the crown is seen on top of Landia's head. A Mirror World version of the crown is also seen on top of Parallel Landia's head.
Kirby Star Allies[]
Void Termina uses two swords with hilts very similar to the Master Crown in his first phase and summons a reflection of the crown itself in his third phase. In the The Ultimate Choice, he summons a physical replica of the crown instead of a blue reflection.
Trivia[]
- The Crown is implied to be sentient in the pause screen descriptions of Magolor and Parallel Landia (even if it's technically not the same crown).
- Kirby Star Allies seems to imply that Void Termina is closely related to the crown as it is able to summon multiple Master Crowns, and the eye in Magolor Soul's mouth, as well as the eye pattern seen around the jewel of the Master Crown, are similar to Void Termina's own eye.
