Lucario(JP) is a Steel/Fighting type Pokémon from the franchise of the same name. It was introduced in the eighth Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew before debuting in the games with the Fourth Pokémon generation games Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It can only be obtained through evolution prior to the sixth generation. It evolves from Riolu leveled up with high friendship during the day. Lucario appears as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series starting with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and also in Pokkén Tournament.

It can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario using the Lucarionite. This gives Lucario the ability Adaptability which increases the same type attack bonus.

Description[]

Lucario is a bipedal, canine-like Pokémon with predominantly blue and black fur. It possesses a short, round spike on the back of each forepaw, in addition to a third on its chest. It has red eyes, a long snout, and ears. When its mouth is open, two pairs of pointed teeth, one in the upper jaw and one in the lower, can be seen. It possesses cream-colored fur on its torso and blue fur on its thighs that resemble shorts. It has a medium-length tail of the same blue color as well. It stands on its toes rather than on its entire foot. It has developed four black appendages that hang down from its head, which rise when Lucario reads or manipulates aura, a special energy that it senses.

Lucario can study auras to predict the movements of its opponents and track their quarry. With sufficient training, a Lucario can read auras to understand how living beings are feeling from more than half a mile (1 kilometer) away. However, it sometimes ends up learning information that it would not like to know, causing it to get stressed out easily. It also has the power to manipulate this energy in an offensive manner, in the form of explosive spheres of energy. Lucario can understand human speech and has been reported to communicate with humans through telepathy.

Lucario is considered to be prideful and is extremely loyal to its Trainer. It also seems to have a natural sense of justice, as it only trusts Trainers with righteous hearts. It is an exceptionally rare Pokémon that usually lives deep in mountains very far from people to improve their skills. Lucario are primarily carnivores, hunting their prey in packs, it was seen eating Berries and plants like roses in the anime. It has also been seen eating chocolate, even though chocolate is not part of its natural diet. As mentioned in the Sleep Style Dex, Lucario never lowers its guard, even when sleeping. It is believed Lucario's reading the aura of others similar to when it's awake.

Mega Lucario[]

As Mega Lucario, its cream fur becomes longer, and its thighs slim down. It develops more spikes on the back of its paws, which have turned crimson. It also develops spikes on both of its feet, which have become crimson too. Its previously red eyes are now orange-colored. Its aura-sensing appendages grow longer, and two of them are tipped in crimson. Its shoulders also possess a spike each. Its aura heightens throughout its body, which formed black markings on its blue fur.

In Kalos, Mega Lucario is believed to be the first discovered Mega Evolution, until the discovery of Mega Rayquaza in Hoenn. It was the first recorded Mega Evolution to be achieved by Mega Stone. People call Mega Lucario's fighting style heartless due to it being bathed in the explosive energy of Mega Evolution, awakening its combative instincts and causing it to not show any mercy to any of its opponents.

Appearances[]

Main Pokémon games[]

Other Pokémon games[]

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team: Lucario is seen as the greatest rescue leader of all time, and his adventures have become legendary. While the player never meets Lucario, Alakazam tells the player that his goal is to become closer to Lucario's greatness. Earning 15000 Rescue Points will put the player in the top Rescue Rank—Lucario Rank—at which point the Lucario Statue will be displayed outside the Team Base.

Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: Lucario is the guardian of the Blue Gem.

Super Smash Bros.[]

Super Smash Bros

Lucario in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Lucario first appears in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a playable character. In the game, it can be found in the Subspace Emissary where it team up with Meta Knight and Solid Snake, among other characters as the game progresses. His special moves revolve almost exclusively around aura, a trait known only in Lucario and Riolu. Its Final Smash move is called Aura Storm. Unlike the other characters, Lucario's power grows as its damage % increases.

The Lucario in Smash was inspired by the Lucario that appeared in the eighth movie, similar to Mewtwo in Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back.

Lucario returned in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, capable for Mega Evolution for its Final Smash. Its voice actor from the eighth movie, Sean Schemmel reprised the character in these games.

Specials[]

Trophy Descriptions[]

An Aura Pokémon. It can track energy called Aura, which is given off by all living creatures. It's a unique combination of both Fighting- and Steel-type Pokémon. Lucario evolves from Riolu during the day if its happiness has reached a certain point. It specializes in attacks that use Aura energy, like Dark Pulse and a can't-miss technique, Aura Sphere.

Lucario's Final Smash. After flying off the screen, Lucario reappears in its center. He then launches a powerful Aura attack against all foes within a certain distance. The key to this attack is the ability to change its angle--it's a must to sweep slowly left and right to hit selected enemies multiple times. The last blow will send the victim flying away.

Pokkén Tournament[]

Lucario is a character for Pokkén Tournament. Upon entering Burst form, it Mega Evolves and can use the Burst Attack Aura Blast. Its moves include Force Palm, Bone Rush, Extreme Speed, and multiple variations of Aura Sphere.

Anime[]

Lucario M08

Lucario in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

The notable Lucarios are owned in the anime such as Maylene, Riley, Cameron, Korrina, Sorrel and Ash Ketchum. In addition, in the movie Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, it is a central character, with the ability to speak via telepathy. Lucario died at the end of the film.

In the Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 animated trailer, Nate owns a Lucario.

A Lucario appeared in Bidoof's Big Stand, under the ownership of a Trainer. The titular Bidoof spent a lot of time trying to get as much attention from its Trainer as he was giving to Lucario.

Other media[]

Lucario appeared in Death Battle, fighting Digimon's Renamon and won.

Origin and inspiration[]

Lucario appears to be based on the Egyptian god of funerals and the dead, Anubis, who has the head of an African golden wolf. Anubis's role in Egyptian mythology was to judge the hearts of deceased souls based on their actions during their life. This resembles Lucario's ability to see a life form's aura. It also seems to be based on an Egyptian boxer. Boxing is a sport that is believed to have origins in Egypt.

The markings on Lucario's face resemble a mask. The rings around its shoulders may be inspired by iron rings used in martial arts. The four appendages on Lucario's head, together with the shape drawn by its mask (a bisected ring), may suggest inspiration from a khakkhara, which in popular depictions can respond to spiritual energies similarly to how Lucario's appendages act when it senses aura. The appendages and the conical protrusions on Lucario's hands and chest may draw inspiration from the jackal's horn, which is a conical growth that can grow on the back of a golden jackal's head that is believed to have magic powers in some regions.

Lucario's golden-yellow shiny coloration may be drawn from the African golden wolf and the golden jackal.

Lucario may be derived from the reverse of the Japanese transcription of orichalcum (a mythical metal) or oracle (referring to its supernatural abilities involving aura). It may also involve Canis lupaster lupaster (Egyptian wolf), λύκος lúkos (Greek for wolf), and possibly luchar (Spanish for to fight).
