Game Builder Garage is a game creation software developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. it released on June 11, 2021. The game's goal is to make the process of learning to make basic video games more accessible. The game proposes lessons in game development and the ability to create various mini games.
Gameplay[]
The game play revolves around the player assigning properties to characters called Nodons to design mini video games. This is done by linking the Nodons and their properties together to form a web of properties that allows you to have the player character interact with the level the user designed. The game also features lessons on video game design.
Development[]
The game is one of the first in the genre made by Nintendo. It seems to be inspired by some ideas found in Nintendo Labo, like some of the basic coding. The Mario Maker series may have also played an indirect role as Nintendo has stated that Super Mario Maker is what made them realize that there was a potential audience for these sorts of games. Game Builder Garage was first announced on May 6, 2021 with a release date set to be on June 11, 2021.
Reception[]
Game Builder Garage received "generally favorable reviews" according to Metacritic. Nintendo Life's Alex Olney praised the game's tutorials, but criticized the lack of visual options given to players. IGN's Seth Macy enjoyed the amount of options and tools the game gives to players. Game Builder Garage was described by Polygon as a followup to Nintendo Labo. It was also the bestselling retail game during its first week of release in Japan, with 71,241 physical copies being sold across the country.
Creators have recreated several notable games using the software, including recreations of Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
