Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butōden (JP) is a fighting game in the Dragon Ball series, released solely in Japan for the Nintendo DS. The game is a 2D fighter with similar gameplay mechanics to the Butōden range of games in the 90s.

It also serves as an 'ultimate' collection of the Dragon Ball Z animes and sagas, featuring a storyline that stretches back from the original Saiyan Saga all the way to the end of the Majin Buu events.

The game is packed with a multitude of characters from the Dragon Ball animes and mangas, such as GokuVegeta and Broly etc.; the game features an elaborate story mode filled with a multitude of short missions for the player to partake in.

The battles are shown from a classic 2D point of view, in a similar vein to the Street Fighter series for example. The fighters are equipped with flying abilities and a possession of energy-based attacks which can be charged up; each character is also equipped with three special attacks that take a certain fraction out of their energy level, as a trade-off for unleashing greater damage in battle.

In addition to the charged attacks, the fighters can unleash into 'burst mode' where they're supplied with infinite energy for a temporary period, but can only be used once per battle. This can be activated by pressing ABXY buttons simultaneously.

Other modes in the game include a challenge mode for the player to compete against CPUs outside of the story, and a multiplayer mode for competition between two players.
