The Dark World, also known as the Evil Realm, is a location in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Originally it was the Sacred Realm, where the Triforce was sealed away to prevent it's misuse. When the demon king Ganon invaded the realm and stole the Triforce, the land was corrupted, becoming a decaying and decrepit mirror of Hyrule.
Anyone who enters this world without some form of magical protection is transformed into a monster that reflects their personality. Link is transformed into a pink bunny rabbit with limited to no abilities. The only way he can freely explore this world is by collecting the Moon Pearl, which shields him from the dark magic of the world.
If the player saves their game in the Dark World, they can choose to either begin at the last building the visited or on top of a pyramid in the center of the map. In the end of the game, the Dark World is ultimately restored to the Sacred Realm.

History[]
Ocarina of Time[]
As Link seals himself for 7 years in Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf is able to access the Sacred Realm seizes the Triforce of Power from the Temple of Light, resulting in the Sacred Realm's transformation into the Dark World as a reflection of the evil in his heart. In the events of Link's defeat, Ganondorf takes the other parts of the Tri Force before Ganondorf is imprisoned in the corrupted Sacred Realm by the seven Sages.
The Imprisoning War[]
Following the short-lived peace, the Dark World's seal started to weaken and many greedy people sought the "Golden Land" of legend and disappeared inside it, transforming into monstrous representations of themselves, seemingly unaware that it was now under the control of Ganondorf. As the disappearances went on, fighting broke out over the misaligned realm and the seal finally broke causing evil power to seep and threaten the world. The new Sages of the era began to seal the Dark World again. Many monsters rushed into the world to stop the Sages, but the valiant knights of Hyrule fought to protect the sages until they successfully sealed the Dark World again for many ages.
