Chandelure(JP) is a species of Pokémon in the series of the same name. It is a dual-type Ghost/Fire Pokémon that made its first appearance in the fifth Pokémon generation in the Black and White games. It evolves from Lampent using a Dusk Stone.
Physiology and Behaviour[]
Chandelure is a Pokémon that resembles a sentient chandelier. It has a striped, round head, and round, pupil-less yellow eyes. There is a ring of small, black spikes on top of its head with a tall, purple flame in the middle. From a black spike below its head, black arms curl upward. These arms are tipped with purple fire.
Chandelure's flames do not burn their victims physically; rather, they burn the victim's spirit. After hypnotizing its opponent by waving these flames, it absorbs the victim's spirit. It is said that any spirits that get incinerated by Chandelure's flames end up losing their way and are forced to wander the mortal world forever. Chandelure is known to reside in rundown mansions. There is a rumor that funerals were a constant occurrence for people that lived in homes that were illuminated by Chandelure in place of lights.

Reception[]
Overall opinions of Chandelure have varied from highly negative to highly positive mainly on the bases of its design as an "object" Pokémon and its gameplay attributes. The design and naming conventions of the species have been criticized by writers of publications such as Game Informer, Digital Spy, and TheGamer. Brittany Vincent of GamesRadar+ also criticized the design of Chandelure, and though she acknowledged the lore of the Pokémon, she still considered it to be just a furniture piece.
However, Chandelure has also been met with positive receptions. While Destructoid writer CJ Andriessen criticized "object-based" designs, he reacted positively to Chandelure, citing that he found its "dumb and silly design" as a chandelier to be amusing. Chandelure was repeatedly reported by gaming site journalists as being a popular Pokémon in terms of both gameplay and design to the point where it is considered a "fan-favorite." In a 2020 poll by The Pokémon Company, Chandelure was selected as being the best Pokémon from the Pokémon Black and White games. In a 2023 Japanese poll with over 150,000 votes, Chandelure placed third in the popular Pokémon ranking, which TheGamer writer Joshua Robertson stated was a surprising result. Nicholas Fujii, writing for Comic Book Resources, praised Chandelure's design, citing that its association with chandeliers and haunted houses helped make the design feel more natural than other "object Pokémon" such as Klefki. Kevin Slackie and Moises Taveras of the magazine Paste expressed praise for the Pokédex entries of Chandelure consuming and cursing souls, citing it as an instance of ghost Pokémon "never disappoint[ing]" in the creepiness factor.
Trivia[]
- In the Pokémon of the Year poll held by The Pokémon Company in 2020, Chandelure was voted the most popular Fifth Pokémon generation Pokémon, receiving 50,943 votes. It was also the eighteenth-most popular Pokémon overall.
- While Chandelure is unobtainable in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Ingo indirectly mentions his Chandelure at one point while in Wayward Cave, describing it as having “wielded flames with mastery”.
- In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U's Smash Run game mode, Chandelure can absorb fire and darkness attacks. The fire immunity can be explained by its possible ability Flash Fire but its immunity to darkness attacks is unfitting considering that Chandelure is weak to Ghost and Dark-type attacks.
