“ | No special precautions have yet proven necessary. "Josie" is quite affectionate, and at this stage is free to move about the lower levels of the facility. | „ |
~ "Containment" procedures for SCP-529. |
Josie, also known as SCP-529 or the Half-Cat, is a minor character in the SCP Foundation mythos, and is set to appear as the main protagonist of the upcoming game SCP: Josie. She is a Safe-class SCP whose only anomalous trait is the fact that half of her body is missing.
Appearance[]
SCP-529 is described as a small gray tabby cat. Near the middle of the ribcage of a normal cat, Josie's entire lower body ceases to be, having been cleanly cut off, seemingly resulting in a void. Josie still walks around as a normal cat, with her stomach seemingly suspended in midair due to this.
Personality[]
SCP-529 is, above all else, an ordinary cat, and as such acts like an ordinary cat. Josie is not known to possess any form of higher intelligence. It is unknown if she does understand humans, but having lived in the facility for some time, it's safe to assume that she at least picked up on her name.
Josie has been stated to be an affectionate cat, somewhat uncommon within the many examples of hostile or otherwise standoffish SCPs. Her nature allows her to be one of the few SCPs to freely roam the area and has even gotten to the point where staff have elected to name her. That being said, as with any animal, Josie has limits, and pushing one's luck with her (such as continuously trying to scratch her backside) will result in scratches.
Biography[]
Possible Origins[]
As the SCP Foundation has no definitive canon, and since SCP-592's article was written by an unknown author, there is no true origin for SCP-529.
What Happened to Site 13: SCP-1730[]
“ | Yeah. I mean, the parts that are missing down there. I thought I was imagining it at first, like guys who have phantom pain, but it's... I mean, I can actually feel my legs, so I don't think it's that. It's like there's something sort of furry and kind of wet that just... just barely brushes past them. Who knows. | „ |
~ An interview with Houston seemingly hinting towards SCP-529. |
One article, namely djkaktus' SCP-1730, is commonly seen as the most likely explanation for SCP-529's condition. SCP-1730 is an alternate version of Site-13, a facility for the SCP Foundation. During an extraction mission, a black liquid was discovered that, upon contact, was able to "remove" the legs of MTF Apollo-3 agent Cotter Houston. When questioned, Houston explained that his legs are still tangible, just in a separate plane of existence. Houston has also stated that "something furry and kind of wet" brushes up on his legs on occasion.
As SCP-1730 pays homage to various classic SCPs, it's heavily implied that the thing with Houston's legs is none other than Josie, or more specifically her own hindquarters. With this context, it's possible that SCP-529 was an ordinary house cat who survived an encounter with the anomalous substance, and was taken in by the Foundation afterwards.
Eternal, the Feline Form Extends: SCP-6529[]
“ | I have seen this world's end: an empty, abandoned wasteland littered with the ice-white bones of that which once was. I will not let this come to pass. We shall need something new, beginning with names. I myself am no longer the man I was, and 'Joséphine' seems overly long to me now. | „ |
~ The final log entry of Magnus' journal, confirming Josie's identity. |
Alternatively, there is DodoDevil's SCP-6529, which also serves as a possible explanation for SCP-529. Josie, then known as Joséphine, was a cat who followed around The Commission on Unusual Cargo in the early 1900's, with her becoming attached to Magnus Kinslow. As days went on during one particular mission, the effects of SCP-6529 kicked in after a horrible shipwreck, leading Magnus to have bizarre hallucinations about the very concept of expansion and elongation as he and Joséphine trekked through the ice. Within these visions, Joséphine seemed to be at the center of it all, her form constantly stretching past the horizon, her backside obscured from view by distance.
As his journal continued, Magnus' hallucinations grew worse as there seemed to be an entity emanating from Valdemar's Chest, the cargo he had been carrying for the entire time. In one last fit of desperation, he made the choice to use whatever was lingering in the chest and sliced Joséphine in half, resulting in her lower half becoming sealed while her upper half remaining. In an instant, all the troubles seemed to melt away, leading to Joséphine and Magnus to return to a recovering ship, and the two going on to change their names and set aside their pasts, with Joséphine becoming the Josie the Foundation knows today.
This proposal suggests that SCP-529 is rather old and that her age is also anomalous, seemingly still kicking in the present day despite the contents of the letter being over two centuries old.
Care Under the Foundation[]
SCP-529 was recovered on an unknown date by the SCP Foundation. Upon being deemed as not a threat, SCP-529 was given free range of the lower levels of the unnamed facility she was kept in. The faculty would grow fond of SCP-529, giving her the name Josie.
SCP-529 was examined by the Foundation staff, where it was revealed that her hind legs not only weren't visible, they weren't there to begin with. SCP-529 has been tested, and has been confirmed to be female. SCP-529 is allowed to meet with other SCPs on occasion.
A Better Half: SCP-7529[]
“ | Although you do not know, can not know, the extent of the efforts: the labour of mind and body that has been bent in a singular purpose — put faith in our account that the horror you set in motion has been resolved through significant sacrifice and resolve. We could speak of these things and more. However, we decided that our best course of action is to be direct — very direct: Do not put the cats together. | „ |
~ Proclamation of the O5 Council regarding Vincent Bohart's planned experiment. |
In a story written by DodoDevil, sometime in the future, Vincent Bohart would discover an anomalous back half of a female cat, with her being labeled as SCP-7529. She acted as affectionate as SCP-529, and she was essentially her missing half, so Bohart would contact Zacharias Hanneman, chairman in the Department of Zoological Studies, in order to reap any rewards. However, the biological data did not match, and Josie had already grown too tired with age to match SCP-7529's energy. However, through sheer persistence and connections, Bohart would somehow convince the higher ups to allow Josie to be transported to Site-333 for testing.
When SCP-529 arrived on sight, it immediately became apparent that she was not a match for SCP-7529. Still, in his crazed attempt at making it work, Bohart would press on alongside his crew. Together, they took the two half-cats, pointed their voids at each other... and they connected.
A flash of light emerged from the "whole", engulfing the room in its glow as everything went awry.
As it turns out, the true classification of SCP-529, at least in this canon, is "Maksur", a classification denoted to pieces of a larger whole that, while passive when separated, are cataclysmic if brought together. The very fabric of the universe slowly unravels as wildlife and human speech die out. The only way to undo this is to turn back the clock and start a fresh timeline to prevent the event from ever happening.
Before anything could happen in this new world, a message was sent out to Bohart by the O5 Council, the heads of the SCP Foundation as a whole, warning the scientist to never put the cats together. Bohart, upon hearing this, concedes, sending SCP-529 back to her usual base before returning home to his massive collection of half-cats, each one of them just like the previous two, running around dangerously close to one another. To Bohart, it was just another Monday.
Possible Ending: SCP-187[]
While the SCP Foundation has no set canon, one specific . At one point in time, SCP-529 was cross-tested with a woman known as SCP-187 (originally written by far2), who was being kept for her ability to see both the present and the future versions of objects. SCP-187 would see Josie as nothing more than an ordinary house cat, and proceeded to pet her.
Given SCP-187's ability to see both the present and future at the same time, SCP-187 seeing Josie as a normal cat would mean that Josie would regain her lower half of her body before she dies, and would therefore no longer be classified as an anomalous entity.
Trivia[]
- The author for SCP-529 is unknown.
- SCP-529 is one of the older SCPs, with her entry coming from before the mythos found its home on Wikidot, and was created during its time on EditThis. Due to EditThis allowing for anonymous users to edit pages, as well as the page's revision history not being properly archived, the creator of SCP-529 has been lost to time.
- SCP-529 was the original logo for the SCP Foundation during its time at EditThis. She was eventually replaced with the iconic logo that the mythos has today.
- The image used for Josie on the wiki was originally uploaded to the Internet by Ionutzmovie and edited by JackalRelated.
- According to the original post, Foundation staff are not permitted to give Josie cheese. If she gets any, she will try to get more, and will experience symptoms of distress if her standards are not met.
- This seems to imply that Josie has a form of lactose tolerance, something unusual in cats.
- According to the entry for SCP-530 (originally written by far2), Josie is able to to form friendships with other SCPs, with her being non-hostile to SCP-530, otherwise known as Carl the Variable Dog.
- SCP-6529 was written for the Unofficial Memecon 2021 event, with the meme that the entry was referring to being the Longcat, as hinted at through the story's constant theming of elongation and vast outstretches, all with Josie at the center.
- During an incident with SCP-408 (originally written by Dr Kondraki), failure to keep their swarm fed led to the collective breaking out to cause mass illusions across Site 17. One of these reported illusions was multiple instances of SCP-529 all running amok.
- Rounderhouse's SCP-3790-J is an anomalous PetSmart that houses equally bizarre "pets". The fourth aisle has only one habitat, with it being marked "There she is!", and contains the back half of a gray tabby cat. Given the referential nature of SCP-3790-J, this is probably meant to be SCP-529's backside, but how it even ended up there in the first place is unknown.
- SCP-529 was "cross-tested" with SCP-420-J, a joke SCP by Quikngruvn. Upon being given the substance, Josie "chased her tail for, like, two hours".
- Afterwards, animal testing with SCP-420-J was prohibited, as SCP-420-J is essentially a heavily advanced and refined marijuana.
