“ Gott in immel. You have become the host! „
~ Wernicke realizing Miles has become the Walrider's new host

Dr. Rudolf Gustav Wernicke is the overarching antagonist of the Outlast series.

He is one of the researchers who worked in the hidden research facility beneath Mount Massive Asylum and the co-founder of Murkoff Corporation. He was the main scientist behind the whole Walrider Project and the one responsible for spreading the Morphogenic Radio Signals throughout Temple Gate, making him responsible for everything that happens in the series.

He was voiced by Marcel Jeannin.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He was a former Nazi, meaning he participated in the atrocities committed by the Nazis during World War II.
  • He started the Walrider Project only for money and power, not caring about the dangers it could cause.
  • The conditions made on the variants were horrible: they were tortured with horrible experiments and by the end, their psychological problems were increased rather than fixed due to the morphogenic machine having violent effects on them, making it understandable they became so violent later.
  • He exposed radio signals of the Morphogenic Engine through Temple Gate, making him responsible of the atrocities Knoth, Val, and their followers did.
  • Even if he asked Miles to kill Billy Hope (the Walrider was dangerous), it was only for pragmatic reasons as he wanted to get away with his crimes.
  • He had his soldiers kill Miles as he knew too much for Wernicke to keep him alive.
  • He was one of the rare Outlast villains to have a full moral agency over his actions, the only others being Father Loutermilch and Jeremy Blaire.
  • Even if he wasn't as messed up as Trager or Eddie Gluskin, he was responsible and to blame of the events of the series and the only Nazi so far.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He seemed to feel remorse for his actions, as he said to Miles that trying to control the Walrider was foolish.
