Sesame Street Season 25 aired from November 22, 1993, to May 20, 1994.

Overview[]

The show concludes its four-year treatment on race relations this season with a focus on Asian Americans, notably Asian-Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and Korean Americans.[1] In one episode the Japanese drumming group Soh Daiko shows Telly Monster and Oscar the Grouch how to work together and play their drums, while film inserts feature children practicing Chinese calligraphy, kids playing in a park in the Philippines, and a Korean spring festival.

A secondary curriculum focus is concerned with teaching kids how to deal with rejection and name calling, particularly on physical and cultural differences. One example sees Mr. Snuffleupagus being called an elephant by a bullying squirrel, while another episode shows how Old King Cole used to be a very mean soul, constantly insulting his servants until they stop being his friends and quit their jobs. An early season 25 episode deals more directly with the subject, when an anonymous caller complains after seeing Gina (who is white) and Savion (who is black) hanging out together. The two explain to a shocked Telly why color and appearance have nothing to do with friendship.

Starting this season, Sesame Street expands its street set to include the previously unseen area known as "Around the Corner." As actor and writer Sonia Manzano says about this whole new block of locations, "By expanding the street and going around the corner, we will have other places to hang out beyond the stoop of 123 Sesame Street, and we will be able to explore family issues which we think are so important to kids today." New locations include the 456 Sesame Street apartment building (housing the local home day care), the strictly Muppet-sized Furry Arms Hotel, a building that houses both a dance studio (upstairs) and thrift shop Finders Keepers (downstairs), the newsstand (eventually run by Oscar), and the park area with a playground. The original elements of the set (such as the Fix-It Shop, Hooper's Store, and 123 Sesame Street) have also been slightly expanded and touched up with new paint, giving the area a more child-friendly atmosphere. In order to accommodate all the new space, the set was relocated to Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York, where it has remained ever since.

Characters and segments[]

This season introduces new human characters and (mostly female) Muppet characters. New executive producer Michael Loman explains: "We've been criticized in the past for not having enough female puppets on the show. And I think that's an accurate criticism. And this specifically seeks to address that."[2] The most prominent new addition to the group is Zoe, a bright orange and very outgoing monster who loves learning new things. She's usually seen in the company of either Elmo or Big Bird. An R&B trio of singing rodents named the Squirrelles also make appearances, performing a series of song spoofs. The mother of Baby Natasha, Ingrid, is introduced along with her previously unnamed husband Humphrey; the two manage the Furry Arms Hotel, run by Sherry Netherland (where Benny Rabbit is the bellhop). The adjacent day care is run by Angela, who also takes care of her six-month-old child Kayla. Her husband, Jamal, works as a park ranger. Celina owns and works at the dance studio, which encourages the viewers to join in some exercise time. Below her, Laugh-In alum Ruth Buzzi plays Ruthie, the owner of Finders Keepers, where every item has a story behind it (usually involving some nursery rhyme or fairy tale character). For the first time since season 3, child cast members are a regular staple for the show, which includes Miles and Gabi (now played by Desiree Casado), joined by new kids on the block Tarah, Carlo, Nathan, and Lonnell. Lexine, who would become a cast member later, also makes her first appearances.

Beginning with this season, letter and number segments are grouped together rather than spread out during each one-hour episode. Elements such as flying airplanes, toy clowns with horns, playing cards, and a toy factory are used for shorter animated segments dealing with letters and numbers, while math concepts are the focus on brief songs and appearances by Farmer McFay and the McDouble Twins. The recurring daytime drama "As the World Takes Turns" appears in a couple of episodes, where the cast and Muppets learn to deal with the eternal struggle that is known as cooperation.
