J. L. Fernán (José López Fernández, 1931-2020) was a Spanish cartoonist and illustrator who worked on several Barrio Sésamo books, including the Enciclopedia Ábrete Sésamo series.
Most of Fernán's work was done for Franco-Belgian comics and magazines, including historical stories for TinTin and Spirou (the longtime feature "Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul.") Often working with fellow cartoonist J. M. Cicuéndez, Fernán scripted Spanish children's comics spotlighting cartoon stars like the Pink Panther, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Bugs Bunny, and Dennis the Menace. In the 1980s, in addition to Barrio Sésamo, he illustrated books featuring TV characters David the Gnome and The Ewoks. His later work also appeared in science fiction anthologies such as Asteroide and Infinitum 2000.
