"Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" is a traditional children's song based on the 1883 song "There Is a Tavern in the Town." The song identifies parts of the body, and is often accompanied with a dance in which children touch the part being sung.
On Sesame Street, the song was featured in the home video Big Bird's Favorite Party Games, led by Luis.
Years later, an animated Abby Cadabby, a kid, a penguin, and a chicken performed the song in an animated music video. Oscar the Grouch also makes a cameo. The music video first appeared on the DVD Elmo's World: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in 2015, and appeared on the show in episode 4712.
Maggie Cadabby led a performance of the song in a 2019 web video. A crab (performed by Martin P. Robinson) appears at the end singing about his head, pinchers, shell, and legs. (YouTube)
The song is used regularly in season two of The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo, where the child contestant sings the song when they first arrive. Their parents then sing the song, but in a silly way dictated by the child. Mecha Cookie Monster sang a version of the song showing off his abilities. (YouTube)
