SCENE 1 | Luis, Susan, and Mr. Hooper have difficulty in explaining what "away from" means to the kids. Luis gets the idea to get Oscar involved by knocking on his trash can, then lingering until Oscar yells at him to get away from his can. Susan and Mr. Hooper do the same thing, and finally tell him what they're up to. They refuse to leave until Oscar tells them to get away from him one more time, so the Grouch drives everybody away when he produces something he's cooking up: a foul-smelling concoction of limburger, anchovies, liverwurst, and garlic. | |

Damian returns with three wilted flowers, Jenny brings three moldy pieces of bread, and Ricardo gives him three old shoes. They all line up so he can count the faces of four Grouches (including his own). | |

Susan tells him that even Grouches need breakfast so they will have energy to be even more cantakerous. Oscar ends the meeting with the Grouchketeer cheer ("How can you spot a Grouchketeer? / He's the one with the thumb in his ear!") before the kids run off and he goes to get some breakfast of his own. | |
