SCENE 1 Picking up where the previous episode left off, the Sesame Street gang prepares for their plane to make a landing in Hawaii! Everyone is excited except Big Bird, who's still sad that his friend Mr. Snuffleupagus didn't make the flight. He proposes that they head back to the airport, but Maria advises that with them 6,000 miles away it's not a good idea. Meanwhile, a stewardess warns Oscar that the upcoming landing could cause his belongings to fall out of the overhead compartments, but that's just the way he likes them and refuses to let anyone touch it.

Buffy explains that the top opening is adjustable so conditions like that won't happen, bringing Oscar's hopes down of staying in a leaky teepee.

Buffy takes the group over to her friend Samson's place, but is a little surprised as usually it's bustling with plenty of people and kids. On cue, the Hawaiian friends and neighbors arrive on a firetruck, and everyone meets Samson, Boogie, Kapono, Keola, Aunty Nona, and all the other local residents and kids for the first time. Aunty Nona gives Big Bird a kiss and teaches him that his Hawaiian name is "Manu Nui."

At the request of Big Bird, Keola tells the story of a big, brown, shaggy creature who lived in Hawaii many years ago. Kapono plays the nose flute as Keola relates the story of the big, long-nosed creature who refused to do any work, preferring to sleep next to the warm volcanoes. His laziness angers the fire goddess Pele, who causes one of the volcanoes to cover the creature in ashes and lava. The creature attempts to escape Pele, eventually growing various plant life all over his body. He reaches the island that they currently reside on: Mount Ihu Papa'a Lo'ihi Nui ... a.k.a. Mount Snuffleupagus!
