How's this for a new aphorism? "Couldn't see the the path for the stumps."
Some of the trees were down after storm Éowyn in early 2025. They tended to be scattered except for the portion of the walk to the NE of Prince Williams Seat and heading south. Here was a row of what looked like Lodgepole pines uprooted. But the main change we found was on the way up as we moved west (north of Cloon carpark). Here there was extensive forestry cutting.
On a new forest road extension there was a large. series of timber stacks. We counted 36 rings on one log so it must have been planted about 1989.
We had planned to head north on a hidden track through the forest. This started approximately to the right of the timber stacks shown in the last photo. The bad news: no interesting hidden walk through the trees.
View of the massive tree felling, north of Cloon Carpark.
The good news: it was perfectly possible to walk through the felled area on approximately the path planned and shown in tracks by previous walkers.
From Knocknagun we saw an abstract landscape of overlapping ridges reduced to simple outlines in the hazy sunshine. The return included Prince Williams Seat and a remaining cool track through the trees. However I wonder how long the trees will remain to enclose this cogniscenti's delight. It was noticeable that in some of the replanting, already underway, that there were the plastic windbreaks used to protect non conifers.
