"Moon Girl Landing" is the first episode of the first season of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and the first episode overall, which also serves as the series premiere.
It premiered on February 10, 2023 on Disney Channel.[1]
Synopsis
When brilliant, altruistic Lunella Lafayette accidentally brings a dinosaur to the Lower East Side, she finally has the brawn to match her brains and protect her community.[1]
Plot
Part I
Lunella wakes up early in the morning, puts on her skates, and generally goes about her day. That is until she arrives at Bubbe Bina’s Knish Niche, and much to her surprise she finds out it has gone out of business.
Ahmed, the owner of Ahmed's Deli, tells Lunella that it seems that it couldn’t keep up with all those blackouts happening throughout the city. He further explains that lost batches means lost business, so they put the kibosh on the knish.
One of the few places largely unaffected by the blackouts is Roll With It, her folks roller skating rink. Thanks in large part to Lunella’s intelligence. Thus, she is effortlessly able to fix the family’s mixer, the fryer and the cash register. But in spite of this, another blackout happens shortly thereafter. Which forces the Lafayette’s to refund the folks.
Later that night, Lunella asks her Pops if they are going to lose the business if these blackouts keep happening. However, her father is quick to remain positive by saying that they will get through it.
Elsewhere in the city, electricity buzzes as a mystery woman laughs maniacally as she drains electricity throughout the city, and into her body.
The next day, Lunella slurps on some apple juice while she scribbles some notes in one of her books. She is interrupted by a rubiks cube being thrown at her, as one of her classmates, Eduardo, orders her to “do the thing”. Thus, she puts it behind her back and quickly begins to solve it, as she has a conversation with Anand. She goes on to explain how she is working on the schematics to what she believes to be, a generator built by a mysterious female scientist who disappeared one day. Not long after, Lunella meets Casey Calderon, a social media influencer whom she finds slightly distracting.
After school, she sees the doors to Roll with it are slightly ajar, and Lunella barges in, asking if everyone is fine. Pops explains that they are, but that unfortunately someone tried to rob the place during one of the latest blackouts. Luckily, thanks to Lunella’s battery power security system, the blue ink splash kept their place safe. Unfortunately, their neighbors weren’t so lucky. Lunella wonders if somebody can’t just call the Avengers, but her grandma points out that the Avengers have bigger fish to fry. She also wonders if they even go below 14th street. Lunella heads down to her secret lab, which she can access via a hidden elevator in her closet, which is located under her building.
While in her lab, Lunella becomes privy to a conversation between her parents, where her dad tells her mom that things are not looking good for them. Thus, if things don’t turn around quickly, they may need to sell the rink. More determined than ever, Lunella vows to get the generator to work, and proceeds to test it out. Unfortunately, rather than an electrical power generator, the schematics from the mysterious scientist were actually for a portal generator. She unplugs it, but it's too late, as she inadvertently has brought a dinosaur into the present day. The red dinosaur roars, and before Lunella can do anything else, said creature runs away from her.
Part II
Casey does a livestream, where she tells her followers that she is talking to the people about their fave blackout attire. However, it is interrupted by the red dinosaur running through the street, and with Lunella yelling out after it to not destroy New York City. Lunella eventually yells at the creature to stop, and he does. But not necessarily due to her commands, but because he can smell hot dogs cooking. Not wasting any time, Lunella prepares some for the red dinosaur, and the prehistoric creature chomps on the food eagerly. He purrs happily at her, and Lunella can’t help but find it cute. Shortly thereafter, Casey snaps a picture of Lunella and the dinosaur. But before Lunella can say anything, another blackout takes place. The two girls look up, and it’s Casey who first looks up and sees the villain responsible for all the blackouts in the Lower East Side. In that moment, Lunella realizes it's this villain’s fault they have been having blackouts, since she is quite literally stealing their power. The female villain laughs before she takes off. But in the process, some debris begins to fall, and it looks like it is going to hit Casey, but Lunella commands the red dinosaur to save her, and he obeys. Thus keeping Casey out of harm’s way before they run away when the sound of the police sirens can be heard.
The next day, Pops is reading the newspaper, which recounts what happened the night before, and mentions the red dinosaur. Pops believes that this is a sign that lizards do live in the sewers, and that it’s only a matter of time before they allegedly rise up. However, Lunella’s mom, exasperated, states that this is really about "the man" paying no mind to this community.
Back at her lab, Lunella tells the red dinosaur that this place used to be an old subway station. But she spruced it up by adding a fusion generator, electromagnetic shielding and triple redundant internet. Eventually, she and the red dinosaur decide they will be superheroes since together they make up for the other’s weakness. However, Lunella decides she will need to keep her superhero on the DL from her family, who would freak out if they knew.
Meanwhile, back at her home, Casey introduces herself to Lunella’s parents, as her best friend. Lunella quickly rushes the other thirteen year old into her room, and asks if Casey will be turning her in. But much to her surprise, she actually came by to thank Lunella for saving her. The two girls talk, and without thinking twice about it, Lunella shows Casey her secret lab. Casey excitedly mentions how with her around, Lunella will be the most beloved superhero, and inspire others like she inspired her. She vows to help Lunella get her message out there in order to help people. Not long after, Lunella agrees and the two girls shake on it.
Part III
Back in her room, Lunella is busy tinkering with her boots, and with Casey’s help, she is able to get a superhero outfit. Which she loves as soon as she sees it in the mirror.
Later that night, Lunella tracks the burglars who have been using the blackouts to their advantage and steal things from the other locales. She makes her presence known and states that the Lower East Side is her turf, and they are messin’ with it. One of the burglars shakes his head asking her if she even has a name, and just like Casey said earlier, he states that if she doesn’t take herself seriously, no one else will. Unfortunately, her first day on the job doesn’t go smoothly, as the burglars get away.
Rather than feel defeated (and because she doesn’t want to move to New Jersey), Lunella decides to devote herself to training the red dinosaur and mastering her own gadgets. Once Casey gives intel on the burglars to Lunella, the superhero in training explains how she learned dinosaurian, and found out that the red dinosaur's name is "Terrifying Fire Beast Who Will Bring About the End of All Things", which they agree to shorten to Devil.
Lunella eventually goes to the burglar’s warehouse, where one of them is asking the other how he looks since the blue paint he is covered in has not come out. Together they manage to capture the burglars this time but their victory is short-lived, as they run into the villain with electrical powers that identifies herself as Aftershock.
After some thinking, Lunella decides to call herself Moon Girl, after the mysterious female scientist. Thus becoming the crime fighting duo of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. ("and Casey").
Part IV
The next morning, Moon Girl goes over her new mission with Casey, which is to stop Aftershock, stop the blackouts and save the LES! But first, they need to find this villainess. She decides to upcycle the cassette player her mom gave her, and transforms into the Multispectrum Moon Scanner. Unfortunately, it will take a while to isolate Aftershock’s energy signature, but in the meantime, she wants to give folks a hand around the Lower East Side.
Once her M.M.S. reaches 100% percent, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur head over to the latest place in the Lower East Side that Aftershock is draining electricity from. Moon Girl is able to trap Aftershock in a bubble, but not long after the villain is able to burst out of said bubble. The two engage in a game of cat and mouse, which ultimately results in Aftershock taking off Moon Girl’s helmet and thereby unmasking her. At first she states that she can’t hurt a child, but the next second, Aftershock laughs as she says that she can least try. However, before she can hurt Moon Girl, Devil Dinosaur saves his partner, but ends up getting badly hurt in the process.
The next day, while Devil Dinosaur heals up, Casey and Lunella head to school. In science class, Ms. Dillon saunters in, and Lunella is shocked to find out her new science teacher is the villain Aftershock, who also recognizes her from their scuffle the night prior. She subsequently threatens Lunella that she will hurt her friends and family like she did her pet dinosaur should she attempt to stop her again.
Afraid for the safety of everyone she cares about, she takes Aftershock’s warning seriously. Back in her secret lab, she tells Casey that she is done being a superhero, and will also be sending Devil Dinosaur back to his time period. Sometime later, she jumpstarts the portal and at first tries to use reverse psychology on Devil to get him to leave. When that doesn’t work, Lunella tries to trick him by throwing some sausages into the portal. But Devil remains adamant that he wants to be by Lunella’s side. Out of options, she forces Devil to leave, by declaring that she hates him. Which hurts the red dinosaur’s feelings.
Part V
During lunch, Lunella is in a funk missing Devil terribly. So much so that in her journal, she has doodles of the red dinosaur. Eduardo tries to get her to solve his rubiks cube again, but she throws it back at him because she’s not in the mood. On her way home, she learns that her family is selling Roll With It.
At home, her grandmother gives Lunella a pep talk, telling her that not even the smartest girl can fix everything. But what she can fix is her friendship with Casey. Determined, Lunella is about to head out to apologize, when on the other side of the door is none other than Casey. The two girls finally talk, and Casey admits that Lunella is the first real friend she’s ever had.
Using the fact that most of the LES thinks she is behind the blackouts, Moon Girl has everyone follow her to where Ms. Dillon is currently charging up. Thereby exposing her as Aftershock. Lunella battles Aftershock, but just when it looks like she is about to lose yet again, she gets the sudden help from Devil who has opted to remain in the city with her.
Using her smarts, Lunella gets the idea to use a lightning rod to sap Aftershock's power and sends Devil to retrieve a flagpole. Meanwhile, the Lafayettes, and the citizens of the LES decide to band together to help Lunella with her plan. Aftershock is sucked up by the lightning rod and all power is returned to the LES. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are subsequently hailed as heroes. All the businesses reopen, including Roll With It, and Lunella and Devil continue helping the people of the LES as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
