Thermal power flow machine

Samus next to the first of these machines.

"Thermal power flow machines" are currently unnamed mechanisms that appear in Metroid Dread. The Map marks them as Interactive Devices, a designation also used for other technologies like Shootactivators.

Description[]

There are six of these machines present throughout Planet ZDR: four in Cataris and two in Artaria. When used by Samus, the machines redirect the flow of lava through pipes that run through Cataris, unlocking certain areas and Thermal Doors and locking others. Samus interfaces with them much like she does other stations in the game, by standing on a pressure plate in front of the mechanism itself and inserting her Arm Cannon into a socket. Once a machine is used, a hatch closes over it and it cannot be used again.

One device in Artaria apparently malfunctions; instead of redirecting thermal fuel as normal, it backfires and causes its facility to overheat. Samus is forced to quickly escape the collapsing room in order to find the Varia Suit.

These machines are etched with Chozo characters that spell "EVE", potentially meaning "hot" or "heat".[1]
