  • The Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Kano Network, newly approved under Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, is committed to advancing Wikimedia’s mission in Northern Nigeria. To commemorate Wikipedia's Birthday, celebrated globally every January 15 since its launch in 2001 as a free, collaborative encyclopedia, the Kano Network will organize a Wikipedia Awareness and Edit-a-Thon. The event will feature fun games, a Wikipedia quiz, and engaging discussions about Wikipedia's history and impact. It will also train new editors, create and improve articles, and engage the local community, promoting knowledge equity and strengthening the network’s presence in Wikimedia activities.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The project involves a one-day event featuring fun games, a quiz, and Wikipedia editing training, followed by a two-week writing contest focused on creating and improving Wikipedia articles. This combines an engaging introductory event with an extended opportunity for participants to contribute meaningfully to Wikipedia.


2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I will share via Kano Network WhatsApp group and Facebook page. I will also the post via my own personal Facebook account.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

I will communicate with the participants via Kano Network WhatsApp group and they will know about the project via the group.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)

Resources

The project will be organized by the leadership team of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Kano Network:

  • User:Gwanki: President and Project Lead, responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of the event.
  • User:M Bash Ne: Vice President, facilitator, and social media handler, managing promotional activities for the project.
  • User:A Sulaiman Z: Secretary and contest coordinator, ensuring smooth communication and managing the writing contest.

All facilitators will participate as members of the contest jury, ensuring fair evaluation of entries and supporting participants throughout the project.
