In 2008, the logo was also [[Meta:Babel/Metawiki logo poll|adopted by the Meta-Wiki community]].

In a surprising move in July 2012, the Wikimedia Foundation applied for the registration of the logo as their trademark, which was officially registered on August 7, 2012.<ref>[http://www.wipo.int/romarin/advSearch.do?ID=0&searchString=+/MARKGR/INTREGN+contains+1152038 Trademark information at the World Intellectual Property Organization website].</ref> This fact, however, was never made public. In response to the situation, a small group of Wikimedians have initiated the necessary formal [https://oami.europa.eu/ohimportal/en/registration-process#opposition08 opposition procedure] against the registration of the logo as a trademark of the Wikimedia Foundation in the European Union. It was submitted to the [[w:Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market|OHIM]] on 2013-09-25 and is [https://oami.europa.eu/eSearch/#details/trademarks/W01152038 publicly accessible].<ref>[https://oami.europa.eu/eSearch/#details/trademarks/W01152038/opposition/002246794 Direct link to the opposition information]. Accessing full PDFs now requires login, but we provided a copy of the [http://wiki.wikimedia.it/w/images/wikina/f/f6/Reclaim_the_logo_Opposition_text.pdf opposition] and [http://wiki.wikimedia.it/w/images/wikina/e/e7/Reclaim_the_logo_Observation.pdf observation] on a Wikimedia wiki.</ref> We are Artur Fijałkowski ([[commons:User:WarX|WarX]]), the author of the logo, Tomasz Kozłowski ([[commons:User:odder|odder]]), Federico Leva ([[User:Nemo_bis|Nemo]]); with help from [[User:John Vandenberg|John Vandenberg]]. Acreditamos que o registo do logótipo como marca contradiz as razões por detrás da sua criação e é contrário à forma como foi usado e modificado no passado. Tendo testemunhado a complexidade e morosidade do processo de autorização de marca, temos a certeza de que o simples facto de que o logótipo seja registado, terá um impacto negativo na capacidade e liberdade da comunidade para o utilizar.

Entendemos que a importância da asseguração dos direitos de marca aos logótipos dos projectos passa por evitar actividades prejudiciais que possam danificar a sua reputação. No entanto, no que diz respeito ao logótipo da comunidade, sentimos que nem a Wikimedia Foundation, nem qualquer outra organização que faz parte do movimento Wikimedia deva manter o registo de marca sobre ele. Cada membro da comunidade deve ter irrestrita liberdade para o utilizar para qualquer fim, como tem sido o caso em muitos anos.

Tivesse a  comunidade precisado de um logótipo registado, este teria sido requisitado para ser criado por alguém. Por outro lado, a Foundation quis oferecer um, criado por conta própria ao invés de registar o logótipo existente.

We hope therefore that the issue can be resolved amicably, in the wiki way: by discussing the matter on a public forum, in the atmosphere of mutual consideration and friendship.
