The USS Fearless (NCC-14598, but sometimes referred to as NCC-2036 USS Fearless II) was a Federation Excelsior-class starship in service to Starfleet in the 24th century.

Service history and disposition[]

Fearless II was commissioned and launched on reference stardate 2/5409 (mid-2310s decade) as a mark II class XIII transwarp battleship. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

Although canon Star Trek never described the "transwarp drive" experiments of the late 23rd century as being successful upgrades, many ships in FASA RPG sources were described as transwarp vessels. This can be reconciled by assuming whatever upgrades took place became integrated in the warp drive capabilities seen in canon and as such, were not commonly mentioned, and perhaps were only marginally effective to the point they didn't bear mentioning. It is also possible that the advent of the "transwarp fleet" and the problematic designation as a "battleship" could be interpreted to represent a different continuity or alternate history.

Later in the 24th century, Fearless had been modified for service as a fleet cruiser or exploration cruiser.

Various sources have multiple descriptors for the Excelsior starship classification in the 24th century. The Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual calls the latter-day Excelsior vessels "cruisers", which matches how Fearless is described in ST video game: Starfleet Command III. Also from Decipher, the RPG reference work Starships calls these ships exploration cruisers. The DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual, set during the Dominion War, has them as full-fledged explorer vessels. Since the various classifications are all sometimes synonymous, it is not necessarily a contradiction between sources, continuities and alternate histories. Also, various vessels may have been refit at various times to perform roles with different levels of specialization and may not match the class as a whole.

The Fearless was commanded by Captain Harrington Weber. (WizKids module: Tactics)

Phigus Simenon served on the Fearless prior to his assignment aboard the USS Stargazer. (STA novel: Three)

In 2364, Kosinski made software improvements to the Fearless warp engines, with the assistance of The Traveler, before transferring over to the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG episode: "Where No One Has Gone Before"; Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual)

In the later part of the 2360s decade Fearless was assigned a planetary mapping mission in the Beta Mahoga system. (TNG okudagrams)

By 2370, the Fearless was under the command of Captain Simon. During a mission to the planet Patnira, Simon and a number of her crew were mutated by an alien weapon, leading to the destruction of the vessel. Among the survivors was first officer Commander Joseph Shabalala. (DS9 - The Brave and the Bold, Book One novella: The Second Artifact)
