Star Trek 12 was a Bantam Books compilation of TOS episode novelizations written by James Blish with his wife J.A. Lawrence. This was the last numbered edition of TOS novelizations, the last Star Trek release credited to Blish (posthumously), and the penultimate release of the series, followed only by Lawrence's Mudd's Angels. A foreword by Lawrence eulogizes Blish, and some explanatory material by Blish is included as a preface. Two appendix sections contain lists of episodes from the series.

Although Star Trek 11 was eventually re-released under the title "Day of the Dove", this follow-up volume was never assigned any other name in English language releases. Translated volumes did not exclusively use the "Star Trek 12" numbering, so they were given unique names: Goldmann's German language translation was #13 in the Raumschiff Enterprise series, title Jenseits der Sterne ("Beyond the Stars") and the Japanese language version was called 上陸休暇中止! ("Shore Leave Canceled!"). Another German translation by Pabel in the Terra series only included 4 of the 5 stories and was called Die Enterprise im Orbit.

• The initial release cover art is widely believed to be by Eddie Jones, although no credit or signature is visible. It is unknown what scene from the stories within might be depicted, showing the Enterprise confronting an alien starship in planetary orbit. This might be equated with the Ekosian spacecraft described in "Patterns of Force". There is no version available where the ship is not obscured by text.
• The later reprint edition shows a scene from "The Corbomite Maneuver", with Balok's puppet onscreen but with Pavel Chekov prominently sitting at the helm. In the canon episode, Hikaru Sulu sat at the helm and Dave Bailey had the seat at navigation, where Chekov usually sat. At this point, Chekov had not been introduced in the series.
• A reprint of the overseas edition from Corgi Books, art by Chris Achilleos, also depicts a scene with Balok's puppet onscreen. Although Sulu is placed properly at the helm position, it does seem to show Chekov instead of Bailey.
