Ronald Altman Bryce[3], also known as R. A. Bryce, was a 23rd century Human man, a Starfleet communications officer who served on the USS Discovery in the 2250s and remained aboard for time travel to the 32nd century. (DSC episode: "Such Sweet Sorrow")

Biography[]

23rd century[]

Bryce's hobbies included kitesurfing on Manark IV. (DSC episode: "Anomaly")

In the 2250s decade, Bryce held the rank of lieutenant junior grade in Starfleet and served aboard the Crossfield-class science vessel USS Discovery under Captain Gabriel Lorca. In 2256, the Discovery participated in the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257. In that year, Lieutenant Bryce piloted the shuttle DSC 01 and transported a boarding party to the derelict USS Glenn. (DSC episode: "Context Is for Kings")

When the criminal Harry Mudd used a time loop to commandeer the Discovery, he disaparagingly referred to Bryce as "random communications officer man". (DSC episode: "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad")

Following the end of the war in 2257, Starfleet awarded members of the Discovery crew, including Lieutenant Bryce, the Starfleet Medal of Honor. (DSC episode: "Will You Take My Hand?")

When the Discovery met the Sphere, the mysterious lifeform caused the universal translator to malfunction. As a result, Bryce's speech was turned into Welsh. (DSC episode: "An Obol for Charon")

In the Battle near Xahea against Control in 2258[1], a rogue Section 31 AI, Bryce joined the officers volunteering to follow Commander Michael Burnham 930 years into the future, to keep the sphere data away from Control. (DSC episode: "Such Sweet Sorrow")

32nd century[]

The Discovery arrived at the Colony in 3189, one year after Michal Burnham. The crew learned that in the 32nd century, the Federation was mostly gone. (DSC episode: "Far From Home")

The ship found Starfleet and the hidden Federation Headquarters space station. (DSC episode: "Die Trying")

Starfleet upgraded the millennium-old ship with programmable matter and other current technology. When an officer wondered whether these upgrades, including tricom badges, were necessary, Bryce affirmed they were. (DSC episode: "Scavengers")

Following the defeat of Minister Osyraa and the Emerald Chain, the Discovery crew adopted the Starfleet 3189 uniform. Bryce wore operations gold. (DSC episode: "That Hope Is You, Part 2")

In the following five months, Bryce was promoted to lieutenant commander and transferred temporarily to the USS Curry to serve as a consultant. Lieutenant Christopher covered his shifts on the Discovery. The two men talked amiable about their duty during Federation President Laira Rillak's opening ceremony for Starfleet Academy and Archer Spacedock in 3190. (DSC episode: "Kobayashi Maru")

During the mission to gather data on the gravitational anomaly that had destroyed Deep Space Repair Beta Six and the planet Kwejian, Commander Bryce advised Captain Burnham on how Cleveland Booker could ride out of the anomaly by kitesurfing. The effort was ultimately successful when Book escaped the anomaly. First officer Saru noted Bryce's contributation, and the bridge crew clapped their hands in acknowledgement. Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline where the war with the Klingons was averted at the Standoff at the Binary Stars, Lieutenant Bryce served as communications officer under Captain Michael Burnham aboard the USS Discovery. (DSC novel: Dead Endless)
