"Magic Painting (2)" is the second of three unusual TOS coloring books featuring original stories that were published by Talbotworth in 1979. Rather than color the black & white illustrations with crayons or colored pencils, the pages have been chemically treated so that colors appear when clear water is brushed over them. In this story, the USS Enterprise confronted an unknown alien starship.

Summary[]

On the bridge of the USS Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu was at the helm when a red alert sounded. Approaching them was a huge, spherical starship with a large protruding rear engine module. The alien ship fired at the Enterprise, knocking the bridge crew to the floor unconscious. A group of uniformed humanoids blasted through the turbolift door and strode onto the bridge, wearing helmets that concealed their faces. The boarding party took Kirk, Spock, Leonard McCoy and Sulu with them at gunpoint, bringing them aboard their ship and locking them in a prison cell.

Kirk was able to knock out a security guard, and the officers escaped. They sneaked through corridors and located the vessel's bridge, finding it to be commanded by a large, glowing, humanoid skeleton-like head who floated in some sort of aquarium tank. It attacked them all with some sort of energy field, and Kirk retaliated by smashing the tank. Liquid spewed from the tank and equipment started to explode all around them. The officers fled through corridors and returned to the Enterprise just as the enemy vessel exploded.

Background[]

  • Pages were printed without captions, allowing for easy foreign distribution, but it meant that the story did not provide names for the alien starship, its personnel or the disembodied head.
  • This book and "Magic Painting (1)" were both published with the label "Magic Painting".
  • The alien vessel resembled a Sanoora world ship. Because the faces of ship's personnel were hidden, however, the similarity isn't enough to positively identify them as Sanoora for purposes of this wiki.
  • The space battle depicted on the cover between the Enterprise and two rockets did not happen in the story.
