This character is a member of the Sulu family.

Hosato Sulu (also known as Liholiho Sulu) was a male Human of Asian descent who lived in the 23rd century. A well-known poet who authored the collections Fire in Frost and Nine Suns, Hosato was also noted as the father of Hikaru Sulu and the husband of Shimizu Hana. Hosato Sulu lived with his family on the frontier colony world of Ganjitsu.
