Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter. A gas can best be characterized as a fluid of neutrally-charged atoms, which have sufficient thermal energy to prevent intermolecular bonding. Gas also has no fixed volume and can expand to fill any area.

In 2293, Starfleet outfitted Constitution and Excelsior-class vessels with scanners to catalogue gaseous, planetary atmospheres primarily in the Beta Quadrant. These proved effective in tracking the modified B'rel-class Bird-of-Prey. Able to fire when cloaked, its impulse exhaust caused a spike in neutron radiation. These ionized waste gases are in flux as semi-plasma, as Spock observed. Uhura was the first to suggest this improvised method of detection. As she noted this Klingon variant was rigged for stealth running on all frequencies and channels, when localizing Chang's voice. (TOS movie: The Undiscovered Country)

In 2376. during a Jem'Hadar attack on Deep Space 9, a cloud of polymer gas was released from a temp bank of atmospheric regulators. A Benzite, Monyodin, was exposed to the gas which dissolved the alveoli in his lungs, resulting in his death. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book One)
