A flux capacitor was a piece of technology used aboard United Earth and Federation Starfleet starships and facilities, as well as by alien civilizations. They were usually installed as part of computer systems, to counter any possible phase shifting effects that might occur due to an improperly calibrated or malfunctioning subspace field coil.
History and specifications[]
In the year 2155, a flux capacitor was installed in the freighter ECS Kobayashi Maru by members of the Vulcan V'Shar in order to give it the needed extra speed. (ENT novel: Kobayashi Maru)
By at least the 2160s decade, an unknown alien race used flux capacitors aboard their ships. However, their technology was deliberately calibrated so that the flux capacitors were not powerful enough to counter the phase shifting effects produced by the deliberately overpowered subspace field coils used in their computers. (Seekers novel: Long Shot)
Flux capacitors were used aboard the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG episode: "Hollow Pursuits")
In late 2375, Miles O'Brien joked to Julian Bashir that the reason he was going to teach at Starfleet Academy was to teach officers the difference between warp matrix flux capacitors and self-sealing stembolts. (DS9 episode: "What You Leave Behind")
The following year, Thirishar ch'Thane overestimated twice the number of flux capacitors he and Nog would need for the new wormhole relay station the USS Defiant deployed. (DS9 novel: Demons of Air and Darkness)
