See Gal Gath'thong for the mountain range on Romulus.

The ChR Gal Gath'thong (also known as the Tellus, Algeron, Nhorazz or Talon) (IRC-1100) was a Vas Hatham-class Romulan starship in service in the late 23rd century. In the 2260s decade, the Gal Gath'thong was commanded by Commander Keras and served as the Praetor's flagship. (CCG set: The Trouble with Tribbles)

Service history[]

In the year 2266, the Gal Gath'thong was ordered to cross the Romulan Neutral Zone and test the Federation's defenses by attacking several Earth outposts along the zone, using her powerful plasma torpedoes. However, the destruction of several outposts drew the Federation's own flagship, the Constitution-class starship USS Enterprise into the region to investigate.

Following a cat-and-mouse chase across the Neutral Zone in which both ships suffered damage, the Enterprise was finally able to gain the upper hand in the Battle of Icarus IV near the Icarus IV comet and was able to disable the Gal Gath'thong. In accordance with Romulan tradition, Keras activated the ship's self destruct sequence, killing himself and his crew instantly, rather than be captured. (TOS episode: "Balance of Terror")

The Gal Gath'thong's engagement with the Enterprise later became known as the Battle of Icarus IV in the Romulan Star Empire. (ST novel: The Return)

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline, the Gal Gath'thong emerged victorious from its engagement with the Enterprise, destroying the Starfleet ship and causing a diplomatic embarrassment for the Federation. (TNG novel: Headlong Flight)

In a timeline were Terra Prime was successful and United Earth became isolationist and xenophobic, the Gal Gath'thong attempted to disrupt the Babel Conference of 2264 between the Interstellar Coalition and the United Earth commonwealth. The ship destroyed the ICV Kuvak while cloaked, with blame initially falling on the shoulders of Earth Starfleet and the UESS Enterprise. To clear their name and uncover the truth, Captain Christopher Pike had the Gal Gath'thong chased. After rescuing the kidnapped Lady T'Pol, and the Romulan commander Keras, the Gal Gath'thong self-destructed. (ST - Myriad Universes novel: A Less Perfect Union)

In an alternate timeline created by Christopher Pike when he avoided his own exposure to delta radiation in 2266, he retained command of the Enterprise by the time the Gal Gath'thong attacked the Earth outposts. Though the Gal Gath'thong managed to cripple the Enterprise and destroy the USS Farragut, her own engines and weapons were disabled in the process. While Keras agreed to a two-hour ceasefire, his sub-commander saw the Federation as easy prey and summoned the Romulan fleet. When the Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire was shown that Starfleet had witnessed the Gal Gath'thong decloaking and attacking Outpost 4, she ordered it destroyed. (SNW episode: "A Quality of Mercy")

Background[]

This vessel was unnamed in canon, but has been referred to in many different ways in licensed works. The prefix "ChR" is from other vessels of the era mentioned in the Star Trek: Rihannsu novels.

Presumably, the ship only has one official name, but the other names will be listed here as possible alternate names. This isn't necessarily a contradiction, as the ship could have been renamed or borne nicknames that create the multiple references.

According to the ST - Prometheus novel: Fire with Fire, this vessel was named the Algeron.
