"By Special Request" is a DS9 short story published in Star Trek: Explorer magazine. It was written by John Peel, illustrated by Louie De Martinis, edited by Jonathan Wilkins, and published in November 2022. It was collected in Titan Magazines' "The Mission" and Other Stories omnibus in 2024.

Background[]

Unusual for Star Trek: Explorer, this story had two original illustrations. One with Miles O'Brien and Julian Bashir was printed on the first page, while Louie De Martinis's contribution was printed after the story, to avoid spoiling the end.
According to the story, by this time Federation law required a person's prior approval before simulating them as a hologram.
Vic's lounge's proper name of Vic's Place was first given in this story.
