The USS Ganges (NCC-72454) was a 24th century Federation Danube-class runabout operated by Starfleet. The ship was assigned to Deep Space 9.

In 2369, the Ganges was one of three runabouts delivered to the new starbase Deep Space 9 by the starship USS Enterprise-D. (DS9: "Emissary")

The Ganges was outfitted with a rollbar containing sensor equipment when it assisted in the apprehension of Bajoran terrorist Tahna Los a few weeks later. (DS9: "Past Prologue")

On a routine mission into the Gamma Quadrant, the Ganges picked up Human archaeologist Vash, who had been in the Gamma Quadrant for two years. On the way back to the station, the Ganges suffered a mysterious loss of power. The power loss was caused by an embryonic lifeform that Vash had discovered. (DS9: "Q-Less")

Odo used the Ganges to ferry the fugitive Croden back to the Gamma Quadrant. Instead of returning Croden to the Rakhar homeworld, Odo went to the Chamra Vortex, where Croden retrieved his daughter, Yareth, in stasis. The Ganges was fired upon by Ah-Kel in his Theta-class Miradorn raider in the nebula before escaping, and a short time later, beaming Croden and Yareth to the Vulcan science vessel T'Vran. (DS9: "Vortex")

Jadzia Dax and Kira Nerys took the Ganges to scan the moon Jerrado for lifeforms and found Mullibok, Baltrim, and Keena in their cottage. When Mullibok refused to leave and invited Kira for supper, she contacted Dax aboard the Ganges and told her that she could head back to the station. (DS9: "Progress")

In 2370, the Ganges was the last runabout to evacuate DS9 in the face of the short-lived Bajoran coup d'état, containing mostly Starfleet families, where its destination was to the Korat system, after a quick stop over at the Lunar V base. Among the passengers who left aboard the Ganges were Keiko and Molly O'Brien, Jake Sisko, Jadzia Dax, Kira Nerys, Morn, a green-skinned alien with beaked face, and an Antican. Quark attempted to gain passage aboard the ship but was late for the ship's departure. (DS9: "The Siege")

The Ganges was destroyed later that year by a T'Lani cruiser during a mission to T'Lani III. (DS9: "Armageddon Game")

Background information[]

The Ganges was "named after the river in northern India and eastern Pakistan [sic] that flows 1560 miles from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal." (Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 296)

The Encyclopedia assigned the registry number NCC-72454 to the Ganges, with the number seen on a starboard profile view of this runabout, and visually confirmed from the ship's wreckage sold in the It's A Wrap! sale and auction. [1](X)

In a draft of "In the Hands of the Prophets", it was the Ganges that Neela planned to steal after attempting to assassinate Vedek Bareil. (The Making of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
