The first people were a group of Humans described in the story of "the girl who made the stars". An individual belonging to this group was called a first person. The story was said to have been told of the /Xam Abathwa tribe a hundred thousand years ago, and was said to take place around the same time. (DIS: "Brother"; ST: "The Girl Who Made the Stars")
According to a version of the story told by Mike Burnham to his young daughter in the 23rd century, these people lived before there were stars in the sky. Living in a village in a valley in Africa, they were hunter-gatherers who had just started to farm, but had not yet learned not to always plant their crops in the same place. They celebrated the sun, but feared the night; as a result, village law said that no one was allowed to travel at night. They conceptualized that fear as a snake-like monster called the night beast. Their social order included elders and queens. (ST: "The Girl Who Made the Stars")
