Sanctuary, also called Chitauri Space, is an asteroid field inhabited by the Chitauri and the former domain of Thanos.
History[]
Chitauri Invasion[]
When Loki fell from Asgard and into a wormhole, he was transported to Sanctuary. There, he struck a deal with Thanos and The Other to retrieve the Tesseract from Earth in exchange for control over the Chitauri, whom Loki planned to use to subjugate Earth.[1] Frigga used her powers to look throughout the universe in search of Loki, and she found him in this sector of space, preparing to travel to Earth.[2]
Loki used the Scepter while on Sanctuary to remotely activate the Tesseract, which was on Earth, triggering a wormhole that connected Sanctuary and the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility on Earth. However, during the Battle of New York, Iron Man flew a nuclear missile through the wormhole into Chitauri space, destroying the Chitauri Command Center and ceasing the invasion before he fell back through to Earth.[1]
Meeting with Ronan[]
Thanos sends away Ronan the Accuser
In 2014, Ronan the Accuser traveled to Sanctuary where he met with Thanos in person and angrily berated him for not taking Gamoraâs betrayal seriously. When The Other scolded Ronan for disrespecting Thanos, Ronan angrily broke his neck, killing him and forcing Thanos to speak to Ronan directly.
Undaunted by Ronan's complaints, Thanos waved him away, and while Gamora's betrayal was an issue, Thanos entrusted both Ronan and Nebula with fixing that problem. As Ronan departed, Thanos grimly warned him that if he returned empty handed again he would bathe the starways in Ronan's blood.[3]

Thanos' Death[]
In 2012, Thanos sent Gamora to kill Iron Man, who had landed on Sakaar after the Avengers' victory in the Battle of New York. However, the two made a pact, and Gamora visited Thanos on Sanctuary with Tony as prisoner and killed Thanos with a Melt Stick on his own domain.[4]
Snap[]
In an alternate universe, Thanos collected all six Infinity Stones and returned to Sanctuary, where he stood alongside his daughters, Gamora and Nebula. Thanos snapped his fingers, using the stones to kill half of all life in the universe.[5]
Trivia[]
- In the comics, the "Sanctuary," and its two duplicates, served as Thanos' base of operations in his plan of stellar genocide in an attempt to court Death. However, his plans were thwarted by the spirit of Adam Warlock, who turned the Titan into stone aboard one of Thanos' Sanctuary starships.
- The coordinates for the Sanctuary are N5X2 1O6311411+2123518.
- Tony Stark's vision caused by Wanda Maximoff during the Attack on the HYDRA Research Base made him see his fellow Avengers dead on the landscape of Sanctuary.
