"Most purpose is more burden than glory. And trust me, you never wanna be the guy who avoids it 'cause you can't live with the burden."
―Mobius M. Mobius to Loki

Glorious Purpose is the sixth and final episode of the second season of Loki, as well as the series finale.

Synopsis[]

Loki learns the true nature of 'glorious purpose' as he rectifies his past in this gripping finale.

Plot[]

Timely Rushing the Gangway

Loki returns to the Temporal Loom just as Victor Timely prepares to launch the Throughput Multiplier, before he dies horrifically to spaghettification. As Ouroboros comments that they took too long to launch it, Loki repeatedly time-slips back in an attempt to hasten the Multiplier's launch, hoping to do it earlier by taking Timely from Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes during their interrogation. However, it is still too late. Loki decides to prepare Timely from the moment he arrived at the TVA, at which point the temporal radiation is low enough for Timely to be able to launch the Multiplier and make it back alive. As Loki and the others celebrate, Ouroboros discovers that as the Multiverse infinitely expands into countless branching timelines, the Loom is immediately overloaded; Timely calculates that the Loom will never be able to scale to accommodate the ever-expanding Multiverse.

HWR Out of Range

Loki travels back in time to moments before Sylvie killed He Who Remains and appeals to her to stand down, but these pleas fall on deaf ears as Sylvie insists on Loki to kill her if he wishes to protect He Who Remains. Refusing to kill her, Loki gets Him to defend himself by freezing Sylvie in time and remove her from the room. He, who is aware that Loki time-slipped to him, explains that the Temporal Loom is a fail-safe: when overloaded, the Loom erases the branching timelines, along with the TVA, to preserve the Sacred Timeline. He also informs Loki of the lofty responsibilities to protect time's stability as the lonely Keeper of Time, before warning him against destroying the Loom, as it would unleash He Who Remains' variants upon the Multiverse.

The Tree of Life

Loki then time-slips to his interrogation with Mobius in the Time Theatre, who gets him to realize that most "glorious purpose" is one of burden that cannot be truly avoided, and that the best course of action is sometimes the ugliest. Loki shakes hands with Mobius, coming to terms with his destiny, after which he returns to a destabilizing 1994 Pasadena to inquire Sylvie on what he should do next, believing that he should restore the Sacred Timeline in order to restore all of existence. Sylvie persuades him to preserve free will instead, leading Loki to believe that he can replace the Sacred Timeline with "something better". Back at the Temporal Loom, Loki replaces Timely and approaches the Loom himself, preparing to ascend to his "glorious purpose". He destroys the Loom, unleashing numerous strands of dying timelines across the chamber. Discovering that he can rejuvenate the timelines with magic, Loki gathers the strands before heading to the Citadel at the End of Time, where he takes He Who Remains' place on his throne and weaves the branches into a tree-like structure.

The Time Keeper

Afterwards, the TVA resumes normal operations, with Hunter B-15 and Casey helping to lead the organization to track down He Who Remains' variants. Miss Minutes is reprogrammed to be friendly by Ouroboros, who issues a new edition of the TVA Handbook that credits Timely as co-author. Timely is prevented from receiving the Handbook at a young age, while Renslayer comes face-to-face with Alioth in the Void. Mobius retires from the TVA to observe his past life in Cleveland, where he shares a moment with Sylvie before she leaves. Their conversation is observed by Loki, the God of Stories, who is now fated to spend an eternity of solitude protecting the Multiverse as the Keeper of Time.
