In the early 2000s, McBurty stole a snowblower. When the Wappinger Falls Police Department was called on him, he gave a problematic statement, making his guilt apparent. However, Detective Ronnie Velasco decided to let him get away with it, leaving the case open.
In 2018, when Jessica Jones stole files from the Wappinger Falls Police Station in order to investigate the death of Donny Sallinger, she came across the unclosed case of the snowblower and deduced that McBurty stole it. She returned the files to Velasco the next day, telling her that McBurty stole the snowblower. Velasco told Jones that she knew, but decided to let it slide.[1]
