A coyote is a predator similar to a dog.
Something coyotes are known for is that they will chew their own legs off if they are trapped. Peter Parker heard of this. When he, as Spider-Man, was handcuffed to J. Jonah Jameson he accidentally bruised his wrist and then suggested that Jameson should chew through his arm like a coyote.
A cartoon coyote named Wile E. Coyote was popular. Spider-Man had heard of it and compared himself to Wile when he fought with Mysterio.
