The mansion was owned by the Stark family. When Tony, as the superhero Iron Man, began leading the Avengers, he donated the mansion so the team would have a headquarters.
It was run by his Artificial Intelligence JARVIS.
The mansion has been invaded by a number of supervillains.

The mansion's address is 890 Fifth Avenue.
After it's destruction, the Avengers moved into Stark Tower, renaming it Avengers Tower. It too was destroyed and the team moved back into the rebuilt mansion.
