History

The Venom symbiote presumably shares much of his history with its Earth-616 counterpart. Bonding to notorious serial killer Cletus Kasady, the symbiote became a notorious archenemy of Kraven the Hunter-Spider, who frequently tried to claim the symbiote and its host's head for his collection of trophies.

At some point after the events of the war between the Spider-Totems and Shathra's Wasp-Totems, Kraven was imbued with the power of the Inheritors on top of his abilities as a Spider-Totem, facing Venom in what he intended to be their final battle. Their fight was interrupted by the Carnage symbiote of Earth-616, who sought to kill Kraven to claim the Inheritors' power for itself. The symbiote sensing Carnage was akin to itself, having formerly been bonded to the Cletus Kasady of its dimension, Venom attacked it. Attempting to pursue Kraven, Carnage abandoned its host, police detective Jon Shayde, to fight Venom.

Cornering Shayde in a warehouse, Cletus mocked his threat to set them both ablaze with an overturned oil drum, saying the symbiote would let him catch the lighter the moment he dropped it; though Shayde countered that Cletus' sadism meant he wanted to watch Shayde burn alive even if it meant risking his own life. Kraven -- stripped of the power of the Inheritors by Morlun -- returned to continue his fight with Venom, while Carnage -- not caring whether Venom won or lost -- returned Shayde to Earth-616 and left to continue its crusade.[1]
