History

Sobek, the Crocodile God, arose among the deities worshipped by the people of Egypt. He was spawned by Ra alongside the likes of Bast, the Panther God and Sekhmet, the Lion God.[6]

As monotheism arose in Egypt, many gods lost their worshippers and sought tribute elsewhere. While their sibling Bast created the Cult of the Black Panther in Wakanda with great success, Sobek and Sekhmet founded only smaller, less influential cults in the country. They were still known and respected by the people of Wakanda, though. Specifically, Sobek was revered by Wakanda's Crocodile Cult.[7][6]

In the modern era, the Egyptian god Khonshu sent his mortal avatar Moon Knight and his allies to an illusory reality designed to wear away the last of Moon Knight's mind.[8] After escaping a mental hospital in that reality, Moon Knight and his allies wandered the streets until they were confronted by Sobek, disguised as a human NYPD officer. Sensing that something was wrong, Moon Knight attacked Sobek and revealed his true identity. Sobek then threatened to eat Moon Knight and expel him at the feet of Seth, the Egyptian god of evil, but Moon Knight was able to incapacitate Sobek and escape.[9] Whether this was the actual Sobek or merely an illusion of Sobek created by Khonshu as part of the illusory reality is unknown.

Notes

  • In Avenging Spider-Man #7 (July, 2012), the Heliopolitan goddess Bast, when referencing Neith / the Great Mother, referred to her by the epitaphs of "the Divine Mother of Ra, the Mother of Sobek, the Crocodile." While it has been established that Neith / Gaea was the mother of Ra, it is unclear if these statements should be taken literally (as if Gaea were also the mother of Sobek) or more figuratively (as if Gaea was the mother of Sobek's bloodline, as had previously been established in the comics).[2]
