History
Mictlan was the netherworld realm of Mictlantecuhtli, Aztec God of the dead.[2]
As Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca destroyed each others' versions of the world in their rivalry, the bones of the previous inhabitants were sent to Mictlan.[2]
After they destroyed the Fourth Sun (the fourth world creation), Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca decided to collaborate. Quetzalcoatl accompanied his brother Xolotl to the netherworld realm of Mictlan of the death god Mictlantecuhtli,[2] to steal the bones of the previous worlds' inhabitants and, on Earth, collaborated with Gaea to create a new race of mortals from the bones of the previous races.[3]
As the Fifth Creation was ending,[4] it was said that Mictlan was rising[4][5] and that the Sixth Creation was coming, as soon as the reincarnation of Huitzilopochtli,[6] the Hummingbird was dead.[5]Residents
Notes
Although Mictlantecuhtli is the Lord of Mictlan,[2] it was stated that Tezcatlipoca was the Aztec god of Hell.[1]
