Beatrice McBride was the only family Malcom had. The one person on Earth who unconditionally loved and accepted him -- despite Carrion's unspeakable sins. When he lost her, he lost everything. And it broke him. 
History
Martha Beatrice MacBride was a woman who cared very deeply for her son, Malcolm, who became the second Carrion. At one point she came into conflict with the Ravencroft patient Shriek, who wanted to claim Beatrice's son, in his Carrion form, as her own son.[2] Sometime after this conflict, Bea passed away in consequence of a stroke.[3]
