History

Fifty-One was an alien recruit of the 50-State Initiative and a member of the Texas-based super hero team known as the Rangers.[2] Years after the dissolution of the Initiative, Fifty-One joined the Paladins, a group made up of other former Initiative recruits who wanted to make a name for themselves.

Desperate for public attention, the Paladins were pulled into a conspiracy orchestrated by would-be Hydra leader Veronica Eden which would see the young heroes take part in staged fights against Hydra. The plan was postponed after Eden's arrest, causing the Paladins to fear for their prominence. In order to manufacture an enemy, the Paladins broke into the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier Adjunct, where Eden was storing the super-computer Overseer and an army of its robot guardian, the Myrmidon. The Paladins reactivated the Myrmidon, but it chased them off and reactivated its master. While the rest of the team intended to turn their back on the threat they had unleashed, Fifty-One wanted to warn somebody, prompting the rest of the team to subdue and telepathically control him using Think Tank's telepathy. The Paladins then fabricated a story about Fifty-One going rogue and turned him into their arch-enemy, orchestrating fights with him any time their visibility was waning.

Wearing the Hydra Supreme Armor

Fifty-One eventually built up enough resistance to the mental control and freed himself.[3] He broke Eden out of custody so she could facilitate him access to the Hydra Supreme Armor to sneak into the Adjunct and shut down the Myrmidon. He was pursued by the Paladins, as well as Iron Man and Captain America,[4] who were fed into the false narrative by Fifty-One's former teammates.[5] Arriving at The Annex with Eden, Fifty-One outfitted himself with the Hydra Supreme Armor and left to the Adjunct. Iron Man, Captain America and Eden followed him, and were surprised when he assisted them against a Myrmidon. Fifty-One was injured, and the Overseer later unleashed the entire Myrmidon army on the heroes.[6] Fifty-One handed over the Hydra Supreme Armor to Captain America while Iron Man escaped with him to seek medical aid. Iron Man delivered Fifty-One to the Paladins, unaware of their true intentions. The Paladins took their former teammate to their apartment HQ, where they planned to kill him.[3] Iron Man returned for Fifty-One after learning the truth, and took him back to the Adjunct. The alien used his telepathy to assimilate himself into the Overseer, overriding the computer's consciousness with his own. Wishing for time to process what he had become, Fifty-One expelled everybody onboard the Adjunct and cloaked the ship, disappearing.[7]

Notes

  • Fifty-One real name is unknown and he initially didn't speak a word.[8] Although he talked later on, he did so in his native alien language, so he was unintelligible.[4]
  • Fifty-One's codename is possibly a reference to the Area 51.
