The Virtual Boy is a console created by Gunpei Yokoi and manufactured by Nintendo. It was supposed to keep fans occupied during the long wait for the Nintendo 64. Its twin eyeglass-style projector displays monochromatic images in red and black once labelled by Nintendo as "true 3D." It failed for multiple reasons: its lack of portability, despite being a handheld, and gameplay could cause a headache in a matter of minutes. It was released in Japan on July 21, 1995 and in North America on August 14, 1995, and was never released in other regions due to being a market failure. It has 32-bit graphics and uses 6 AA batteries.

Only three Mario-related games were released for the system: Mario's Tennis, Virtual Boy Wario Land, and Mario Clash. Two games were planned but later canceled due to to the system's failure: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (converted into a Super Nintendo Entertainment System game) and VB Mario Land.
