- Not to be confused with Yoshi (character).
Green Yoshis are the most common color variant of the Yoshi. They can be found residing in Dinosaur Land and Mushroom Kingdom. The titular Yoshi who acts as a sidekick to Mario and Luigi is a Green Yoshi. Dozens of other Green Yoshis have also appeared alongside or separately from the main Yoshi.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario World[]
Green Yoshis make their debut in Super Mario World (alongside the main Yoshi), where they can be hatched from a Yoshi Egg whenever Mario/Luigi finds one. In this game, Green Yoshis can eat enemies to defeat them, including enemies Mario and Luigi can't normally defeat on their own, such as Spinies. The Green Yoshi can also use this ability to receive different powers depending on which color of Koopa shell he is holding in his mouth. These abilities are:
- Green Shell – Spit
- Red Shell – Spitting Fireballs
- Blue Shell – Flying
- Yellow Shell – Ground Pound
- Rainbow Shell – Flying, Ground Pound, and Spitting Fireballs
Green Yoshis can also eat Berries in this game, each of which have different effects. If a Green Yoshi is to eat ten red berries in the same level, he will lay an egg which hatches into a Super Mushroom for the plumbers to collect. If he eats two pink berries in the same level, he will lay an egg that hatches into a cloud which tosses Coins. This cloud will also provide a 1-Up Mushroom once all the Coins are collected. Green Berries will add 20 seconds to the timer.
If Mario or Luigi beats a level while riding a Green Yoshi, the Yoshi will remain with him and join him in future levels. However, Green Yoshis are rather timid and are scared of Ghost Houses and Castles, and will wait for Mario and Luigi outside until they've finished up business in there.
In the SNES version of the game, Yellow, Red and Blue Yoshis can only be hatched from eggs in the Star World, and only the Green Yoshi can be found in Dinosaur Land. However, in the Game Boy Advance remake (Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World), the different colored Yoshis can also appear at random in Dinosaur Land after they are discovered in the Star World allowing one to use their effects in any level of the game.
Super Mario Advance[]
Green Yoshis make an appearance in the Super Mario Bros. 2 remake, Super Mario Advance along with some other colored Yoshis in the exclusive "Yoshi's Challenge" mode. Their eggs can be found in the first level of each world and can be collected.

Green Yoshis make small appearances in Super Mario Sunshine, in this game, a Yoshi will start out green upon hatching from the Yoshi Egg but will turn into a different color (purple, pink, or orange depending on the fruit) immediately after, also runs out of juice, the Yoshi will turn green if they are about to die from not eating another Fruit for a long time. While green, Yoshis spit water instead of juice. Yoshis can also turn green upon hitting water before they evaporate.
In the game's beta files, it is shown that Green Yoshis were planned to appear as a basic color for the Yoshis rather than only appearing briefly each time.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[]
While absent from the original Super Mario Bros. 3, a Green Yoshi makes a cameo appearance in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. In this game, the King of the Pipe Land was turned into a Green Yoshi by Ludwig von Koopa (in the original, he was turned into a Venus Fire Trap).

The Yoshis cannot be brought into other levels, once the heroes tag the Flagpole, the Green Yoshi remains behind and waves goodbye to the heroes as they enter the castle. Also, in the Super Mario World style, knocking on a Door theme may cause Weird Mario to appear riding a Green Yoshi.
