An antagonist is a character that creates obstructions and challenges against the protagonist.^[1] Not all antagonists can be considered villains, which is an archetype of an antagonist.

Example of an antagonist is Bowser. In this scenario, Mario is the hero, whose goal is to save Princess Peach, the damsel-in-distress. Bowser is an antagonist because he sends his minions to hold back Mario from rescuing Peach.
