“ Today we will do mean things, and we will do them in style! „
~ The Grinch to Max.

The Grinch is the titular villain protagonist of the 2018 animated Illumination film The Grinch, based on the 1957 Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. The Grinch is a green loner who lives in a cave in Mount Cumbit with his dog Max, with a heart "two sizes too small". Due to his misery as a result of being lonely and having to put up with not being able to celebrate Christmas with anyone for fifty-three years, he comes up with a plan to end Christmas in Whoville.

He was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • Like the original, this version of the Grinch is very charismatic and suave, executing his plans with flair and style. He never loses his composure in an undignifying manner (him panicking when his stolen items begin to fall off the cliff is understandable). Also, though he is relatively sadistic, it is a minor trait which is overshadowed by his charm and brilliance.
  • The Grinch manages to remain extremely sympathetic and likeable to the audience, even more so than the original. He is significantly less grouchy than the original, has added emphasis on him being an unloved loner, and has his villainy significantly toned down, as he treats Max well instead of abusing him, lacks the crimes the original had in Halloween is Grinch Night and The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, and is overall more mischievous than actively malicious.
  • While he does show mischief towards the Whos in slightly jerkish and petty ways (e.g sending a Who flying, acting mean to a child and even causing some vandalism in a supermarket with one or two pickle jars), and was given some comedic moments like being a bit clumsy at times, he does manage to subvert these qualities later in the film, especially when he lets a reindeer named Fred live with him (and taking good care of him as well).
  • He concocts a plan to steal all of the Whos' presents, food, and decorations. When his original plan involving Fred fails, he quickly comes up with a backup plan, by using his own gadgets to aid him in stealing the Whos' belongings, and his backup plan is executed flawlessly.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • Though overall less villainous than his original counterpart, he still manages to steal all of the Whos' presents, decorations, and food in an attempt to destroy their Christmas spirit.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Illumination Entertainment Magnificent Baddie to not originate from the Despicable Me franchise.
