King Piccolo is the main antagonist of the original Dragon Ball anime series. He is the evil incarnation of Kami, the father of Piccolo Jr. and the archenemy of Master Roshi, as well as Goku's first archenemy before Frieza. He seeks to conquer Earth and rule over it forever, which he temporarily succeeds in doing.
He was voiced by the late Takeshi Aono in Japanese and Christopher R. Sabat in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Takeshi Aono and Chris Sabat do outstanding performances of him.
- He is the first genuine worldwide threat that's taken seriously in the franchise.
- He genuinely cares about his offspring, as he never abuses them, gets angry when they die and gives his last offspring Piccolo Jr. genuine words of encouragement before dying.
- He shows mercy on a few occasions. This is shown when he spares Roshi and Shen after defeating their master Mutaito, chooses not to attack Yajirobe despite sensing his energy, doesn't kill the Pilaf Gang and lets them serve him after they release him and spares King Furry's life after overthrowing him.
- He's able to manipulate and convince the Pilaf Gang, who are quite manipulative themselves, into helping him find the Dragon Balls.
- He has strategic intelligence and this very trait was even passed down to his son Piccolo Jr., with examples being:
- Sending Tambourine to eliminate all potential threats to his plan of ruling Earth.
- Correctly analyzing that the Pilaf Gang were trying to use him so that they could rule the world, and therefore betraying them before they could do it first.
- Killing Shenron to make sure no one wishes for his goals to be undone with the Dragon Balls.
- Swallowing two Dragon Balls so that the Z-Fighters come out of hiding and fight him and not spitting them out until he eliminates every threat.
- Waiting until he regains his youth to continue his goals for world domination, knowing he will die soon and will not be strong enough due to his old age.
- Checking Goku's pulse to make sure he's dead after their fight so he can't get up and attack him again.
- Increasing his size in order to gain more strength against Goku and Tien.
- Immobilizing Goku by damaging his limbs so he can't fight back.
- Spitting out one last egg before dying to make sure his plans are still succeeded by his son even in death.
- He manages to succeed in his goals for a while. He uses the Dragon Balls to regain his youth, and successfully overthrows King Furry and becomes the new king of Earth. Had Goku not gotten strong enough to defeat him, he would've completely succeeded in taking over Earth permanently.
- Additionally, his son nearly managed to defeat Goku as he was ordered to do so and actually succeeded at the start of Dragon Ball Z, but it was part of a sacrifice Goku made.
- Despite conquering Earth, he shows no actual interest in ruling it, as he lets the criminals do whatever they want and even sympathizes with them, as he compares their imprisonment to his.
- Overall, if it weren't for him, the lovable character Piccolo Jr. would not exist and become a member of the Z-Fighters, nor would he be the mentor of Goku's son Gohan and help him become a powerful hero and protect Earth like Goku.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- He wreaks havoc on Earth after being born, killing multiple people and placing their souls into a state of limbo.
- He has Tambourine take out any fighters who could seal him again, with a primary example being Krillin, who was only a child at the time.
- He destroys half of Earth's capital city to make King Furry surrender.
- After becoming king, he decides to destroy a city every year until nothing was left on Earth.
- When Goku gains the upper hand, he takes Tien hostage and tortures him, then attempts to finish off Goku after injuring his limbs.
