Ford Cruller is the overarching protagonist of the Psychonauts franchise, serving as one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Augustus Aquato) of Psychonauts and the deuteragonist of Psychonauts 2. He is the founder of the Psychic Seven, the group that would become the Psychonauts, and the one who managed to defeat and subdue Maligula in a duel.

He is voiced by David Kaye.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

• Despite having a split personality and being mentally ill, this doesn’t detract his magnificence, especially since he fixed his mind at the end.
• He founded the Psychic Seven, the organization that would become the Psychonauts, encouraging the members to explore their talents and research what was behind their mental doors.
• He fell in love with Lucrecia Mux, sneaking off to go bowling with her.
• He bailed Compton out of prison and invited Helmut to perform for his group, and personally recruited Cassie and Bob as well.
• He managed to subdue Maligula (who almost won the battle) when the Psychic Seven were called to stop her, taking Lucrecia back to the Heptadome and sealing Maligula deep within her mind.
• He would secretly dispatch Sasha and Milla on missions when he was limited to the role of a Whispering Rock scoutmaster and written off as a loon, showing he is still committed to the Psychonauts regardless of their opinions on him.
• He also secretly mentored Raz when he arrived at Whispering Rock, giving him a Marksmanship/PSI Blast permit and teaching him pyrokinesis, telekinesis, and invisibility. He also mentions giving Raz extra credit exams that the latter aced.
• He told Raz about Oleander's plans, enlisting the young psychic on a mission to save his fellow campers' brains (he took their bodies to his sanctuary). When Raz returned the brains to Ford, the latter rebrained the campers with the former's help.
• During the mission, he provided many useful tips to Raz, convinced him to sympathize with Linda (who was under Oleander's mind control at the time, thereby making her actions not her fault), and told him to keep Lil' Oly and his bunnies out of trouble at the Meat Circus.
• He arrived to help Sasha and Milla fight Oleander, giving the insane Psychonaut sneezing powder.
  • To prevent himself from going through his split personalities he had a chunk of the Psitanium strapped around his back to maintain his mind in one place.
• He officially made Raz a Psychonaut at the end of the game, even if it didn't hold up in the sequel (where the latter became an intern for Nick Johnsmith and later a junior agent).
• When he was reintegrated, he directed Raz on a mission to restore Lucrecia's psyche with the Astralathe, keeping Lucrecia calm as her real memories resurfaced.
• With Raz, he gathered the rest of the Psychic Seven in their ritual to banish Maligula. The former two entered Lucrecia's mind when she was in the Astralathe, where Ford kept her calm in the dam.
• He held his own against Maligula for a while in Lucrecia's Lament without Raz's help (whom "Truman" had ejected from her mind under the pretenses of the 10-year-old acrobat being "obviously in distress"), and later tried to bring the real Lucrecia out when her alter ego was awakened again.

What Makes Him A Baddie?[]

• He manipulated Lucrecia and Augustus into believing Lucrecia was actually Marona to keep both of them safe, which involved warping their minds and altering their memories. He also gave them a deep fear of water in case Maligula rose again. While it was to keep them safe these things are portrayed by the narrative as very wrong and some of the worst things a psychic can do.
• He lied to the world that he had killed Maligula and his mind was shattered in the process, when in reality he shattered his own mind out of guilt for manipulating Lucrecia and Augustus' memories and had hidden Lucrecia among her family.

Trivia[]

• He, along with Coach Morceau Oleander and Dr. Loboto, are the only Psychonauts characters to be Magnificent Baddies.
  • He is also the only one to be heroic throughout the series, as the other two started out as villains before their redemptions.
