“ | No one cared who I was till I put on the mask. | „ |
~ Bane's introduction and most famous quote. |
“ | I'm necessary evil. | „ |
~ Bane before killing John Daggett. |
“ | We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity and we give it back to you...the people. Gotham is yours. None shall interfere. Do as you please. But start by storming Blackgate, and freeing the oppressed! Step forward those who would serve. For an army will be raised. The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests, and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure. Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed. The police will survive, as they learn to serve true justice. This great city... it will endure. Gotham will survive! | „ |
~ Bane starting the revolution of Gotham |
Bane is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Talia al Ghul) of The Dark Knight Rises.
He was a ruthless terrorist and the field commander of the League of Shadows who sought to fulfill the destiny that the league's founder Ra's al Ghul had been previously determined to accomplish: the annihilation of Gotham City. It was eventually revealed that he was the protector-turned-accomplice of Ra's daughter Talia al Ghul.
He was portrayed by Tom Hardy.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- While he's easily heinous enough by the trilogy's standards, his tragic backstory, love for Talia, and benevolence towards his henchmen keep him from being too awful and heinous compared to Joker. He's also a member of the League of Shadows, an extremist group that genuinely believes in saving the world by destroying its most decadent locations, even calling himself "necessary evil" at one point.
- He also has a polite demeanor in general. For example, complimenting the singing boy at the football stadium as having a lovely voice and even letting him finish "The Star-Spangled Banner" before setting off the explosives there.
- He lets himself get caught by the CIA to crash their airplane and capture Leonid Pavel, avoiding suspicion for months by faking the doctor's death and having one of his goons voluntarily stay behind.
- He bankrupts Wayne Enterprises by attacking the stock exchange and then kills the corrupt John Daggett (who hired him to do this, to begin with) once his usefulness expires.
- He exposes the late Harvey Dent as a fallen hero and his crime of attempted child murder, using it to rally the support of the people to begin a massive revolution all across the city.
- He beats Batman in a one-on-one fight, breaking his spine after robbing his armory in the sewer.
- He's able to keep Bruce and most of the GCPD trapped underground, and the entirety of Gotham detained from trying to fight back or escape, for five months at most.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He tries to destroy Gotham City with a nuclear bomb, forcing Bruce to watch complete anarchy-communism unfold there from an underground prison until said bomb finally detonates.
- He kills two of his henchmen for bringing James Gordon to their hideout in the sewer.
- He kills several people (including Dr. Pavel and the mayor) at a football stadium while the crowd watches.
- He kills the captain of the undercover special force's officers in Gotham, having the rest hanged on live TV.
Trivia[]
- This is one of two versions of Bane as a Magnificent Baddie, the other being his Arkhamverse counterpart.
- He, Ra's al Ghul, and Talia al Ghul are the only villains from The Dark Knight trilogy and a Batman live-action film itself to be a Magnificent Baddie.
