Ai-kun (あい君 Ai-kun), is Ranka Lee's baby pet Vajra in the Macross Frontier series and its subsequent theatrical adaptations.
Personality & Character[]
Ai-kun is an adorable and affectionate pet that hides under Ranka Lee's clothing. He particularly enjoys lounging around Ranka's hair. He is very attached to Ranka, even after he begins to evolve, and stays by her side when she is in trouble. In the television series, he spawns tentacles which helps him grab on and save others who have been blown off into space.
History[]
Ranka Lee originally found Ai-kun wandering around Island 1 of the Macross Frontier fleet. She adopts the little critter, unaware it is a baby Vajra that was attracted to her singing. By the 21st episode of the series, Ai-kun evolves into a stage-2 Vajra, gaining appendages and a chitinous skin. Despite his off-putting appearance, Ai-kun remains by Ranka's side, even after the rest of his species leave for another galaxy.
Macross Frontier Theatrical Adaptation[]
The circumstances on how Ai-kun meets Ranka is slightly different in the movie versions of the series, and Ai's appearance also differs in that he emits light when he hears Ranka's singing. Although small in scale, Ai-kun has the ability to create and maintain a fold barrier, which saves Sheryl Nome after she is accidentally blown into space. Like the series, Ai-kun also evolves in the films, gaining wings beard from the back. Also, the figure after growth has changed.
