Summary

Description
English: A helmsman relies upon visual references, a magnetic and gyrocompass, and a rudder indicator to steer a ship as directed by the mate or other officer on the bridge. The bridge of the freighter shown here has two steering stands. This redundancy is a safety measure in case one of the steering mechanisms that controls the ship's rudder fails.
