WORKING FOR ESPN?!?!?!?!?!

[edit]

I'm surprised there's nothing about his work for ESPN as an announcer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.211.97.154 (talk) 02:43, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Metrowest Medical Center

[edit]

The article calls it "Framingham's Metrowest Medical Center", but it is Natick and Framingham's. There were two hospitals -- Leonard Morse, in Natick, and Framingham Union, in Framingham. Leonard Morse was owned, by the will of Mary Ann Morse, by the townspeople of Natick. Through much skullduggery (why would you say we in Natick are still bitter?!), the will was broken, and the two hospitals were merged, and bought by a company. They became "Metrowest Medical Center, Leonard Morse Campus", and "Metrowest Medical Center, Framingham Union Campus". I've edited the article just to change it to "Natick/Framingham's Metrowest Medical Center".

It may be time to pull the "Flutie Flakes" link, apparently either the product or at least the website is now defunct. Rlquall 05:50, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

red t-shirt

[edit]

Can anyone add a sentence or two on the red t-shirt that Doug always wears under his football uniform?

I don't know if it is related - but Doug Flutie grew up in Natick, Massachusetts and graduated from Natick High School. Natick High School's team name is the Redmen and the town slogan is, "home of champions" - of which Doug Flutie is just one. Nonetheless, all this is to say that Natick's color is red - so perhaps this is an old high school jersey.

I had seen one of these "human interest" type stories quite a few years ago about doug and the t-shirt that went something like: it was his older brother's high school shirt, and his brother died in an auto accident, so Doug wears it every game to remember him. But I can't find any evidence to back up my story. That is erroneus, Doug did not lose an older brother. He has 1 older sister, Denise, an older brother, Bill, and a younger brother, Darren. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.191.226.74 (talk) 14:30, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to incorporate this info in the Bio section.
Both of Flutie's brothers are still alive. That story would make a good country western song, but no.

is it true doug flutie is of arab descent?

Yes, I added this information as well. Here are a few sources:
http://www.aaiusa.org/arab-americans/23/famous-arab-americans
http://www.playfootball.com/be_a_player/meet/doug/doug_week5.html

Rhodes Scholarship nomination at BC

[edit]

Here's the citation for Flutie's Rhodes nomination and some other aspects of his BC career:

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/bc/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/flutie-ruth.pdf

I clarified this in the article. It's true that BC nominated Flutie for the Rhodes, but he was not named a Rhodes finalist. A school can name anyone they want, but his candidacy did not go beyond that.

drop kick

[edit]

i think it's a little too early to say that the Patriots' last regular season game this year is the last game of his professional career. first of all, I haven't heard him say that he's retiring, and second, the patriots are in the playoffs, and if anything happens to Tom Brady, as far as I know, Flutie will be playing, since he is the backup QB.--Alhutch 22:05, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He needs Brady and Cassel to get hurt. That's probably why Cassel played today. I also believe that that was edited already. Jjjsixsix 06:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd lay odds that if Brady got hurt, they'd put Flutie in during the playoffs rather than Cassel. Just a thought. -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 06:09, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Top 10 Scrambling QB's

[edit]

What?? Flute #10 ?? He should be higher than that. I was hoping I would see a mention of Tracy Ham (how many QB's in the NFL lead the league in rushing) or Damon Allen in the top 10. It is like making a hockey list of the top 10 best passing teams in history and forgetting teams from the Soviet Union. Stettlerj 03:54, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flutie's Future

[edit]

I didn't put this in as a reference on the page, since (unless you're a paid member) KFFL only displays most recent information, but if anybody wants to check my info, etc: KFFL info on Flutie -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 03:03, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arab-American

[edit]

There is no way flutie is arab-american...look at how white he is and his name! Do you know any arab-americans named Douglas Richard Flutie? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.152.115.2 (talkcontribs) .

Yes, oddly enough. He's a former professional quarterback. Powers T 19:53, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most Arab Americans are Christians, and yes, they are White. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PassTheYouth (talkcontribs) 18:00, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Arab-Americans are Semitic not "White". With respect to Flutie's name and complexion, that has little to do with respect to him being an Arab-America or not --209.163.173.127 (talk) 15:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care about our ancestry, what I know is that on government forms and by all people I've met, I as a Lebanese American am classified as White. And to guy who asked, there are plenty of Arabs with the name Douglas, and Frank, and John, and Bill, and all the anglo names you can think of. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LebanonIsCool (talkcontribs) 19:01, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You choose to check off white because that is how you self-identify. What means caucasian; Arabs are not caucasian. --209.163.173.127 (talk) 13:00, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Autism

[edit]

Nobody's going to rename autism Flutie Disease or any such thing. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.65.56.48 (talkcontribs) .

No. And? Powers T 01:34, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

uh, "Caucasian" ?

[edit]

I don't know what the Wikipedia policy on this is, but is the quaint term "Caucasian" standard usage here to refer to a white person? Would "white player" be objectionable? "Caucasian" carries a more than a whiff of dated racial pseudo-scientism, imo, and it's fading fast in ordinary usage, at least in North America.

I Protest

[edit]

I don't race should have anything to do with football awards. describing him as white is not needed. Why don't we say he was the first brown eyed player to win it in five years, for instance?

I agree that race should not be mentioned since he is white. However, note that nearly every time a black person is the "first" to win whatever (or puerto-rican or whatever) it is mentioned in Wikipedia. There is an inconsistency here. People will say it's okay for "minorities" to do this, but separately claim that we are about to become a nation of minorities. The article is fine with me without the mention, but this needs to be discussed in a higher context in Wikipedia. Either "firsts" or other uniquenesses are mentioned for everybody or they aren't. If they aren't, this is going to eliminate a lot of "first black attendees" category (for example). Student7 14:05, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CFL stats

[edit]

Flutie was recently voted the #1 player in CFL history (see TSN Top 50 CFL Players). We need to include his CFL stats in the recently added NFL-retired infobox, or use a different infobox. heqs ·:. 07:49, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I accidently changed the stats to something, else, shorter. I was borrowing the template, edited it on fluties page, and was going to transfer it, but i accidently hit save, I have changed it back though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sportyguy03 (talkcontribs) 15:00, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flutie Pass, Natick Mall, Natick (or Framingham), MA

[edit]

I'm not a local so I don't have all the details but I hope others can make this "article worthy". Just behind the Natick Mall (in Natick or Framingham, MA), is a little connector road called "Flutie Pass". It is kind of a little passageway from the Natick Mall to the next mall to the west which I think is called "Shoppers World". For those of you who know the little traffic circle behind the mall, the east-side road is Natick Mall Road, the north-south road is Dean Road and the road west to Shoppers World is Flutie Pass. (And remember: traffic already IN the circle has the right of way. If you're IN the circle, keep driving, don't stop. If you're approaching the circle, yield to the cars IN the circle and enter when traffic is clear.)

To help others find Flutie Pass:

  1. maps.yahoo.com doesn't find Flutie Pass, so enter "1350 Worcester Rd., Natick, MA" (Worcester Rd. is better known to locals as Route 9). Zoom in and you can see the next road to the north is "Flutie Pass". You might also see "Natick Mall" as a big splotch along Route 9.
  2. maps.google.com does find "1 Flutie Pass, Framingham, MA", so that's easy. Here's the google link.
  3. Here's the movie theater at 22A Flutie Pass, via MapQuest.

Hail Flutie, Flutie Effect, Flutie Flakes, etc. have their own entries. Do you think "Flutie Pass" deserves an entry as some sort of Civil Engineering / Traffic Management / Doug Flutie thing? I hope someone can at least insert a properly researched story of Flutie Pass into the main article on Doug Flutie. AdderUser (talk) 05:12, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Born in Manchester or Catonsville?

[edit]

I know it's not a huge detail, but it says he was born in Catonsville in his bio, but on the right it says Manchester, which are not near each other at all, and in different counties. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Leighlewis (talkcontribs) 09:13, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Image

[edit]

Can someone change the image of Flutie? I think a BC image or other football one is more relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.159.66.57 (talk) 19:23, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, if you find us a freely licensed image that fits those criteria. Powers T 13:06, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oldest player to score a touchdown

[edit]

This fact is incorrect. I have found at least two players that were older than Flutie that scored a touchdown. Warren Moon scored a touchdown at the age of 43 years and 338 days in 2000. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MoonWa00/gamelog//

George Blanda was 47 years and 88 days when he threw a touchdown in 1974. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BlanGe00/gamelog//

This record obviously belongs to Blanda as no one else played to the age of 47 except kicker Morten Anderson, who obviously did not score a touchdown that season (2007)

Bobby Marshall played two games in 1925 and may have scored a touchdown but records are incomplete from those days. He turned 45 that year.

Flutie is credited as breaking Jerry Rice's record, this, as a result is also incorrect and should be removed from his page as well if it exists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flea82 (talkcontribs) 17:53, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1995 CFL footnote

[edit]

Even though I fixed the asterisk formatting, I do not understand the footnote on the 1995 "games" in the statistics table. The "games" column is for games played in, not games dressed for. In several other seasons, there were games in which Flutie was on the sidelines but did not play. (And according to the CFL itself, Flutie played in 12 games that season, as noted here.)    → Michael J    07:06, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
