Thrush

A thrush cracking snails at the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Thrushes were slender, small-to-medium sized birds known for their harmonious songs.

History[]

The thrush outside the Lonely Mountain's Side-door was said to have belonged to an ancient breed known by Thorin's ancestors. The Men of Dale were able to understand their speech as thrushes served the men as messengers.[1] Bilbo Baggins was skeptical that any of the Lake-men still spoke the thrush language, but this was proven wrong when one thrush told Bard the Bowman of Smaug's only weak spot, during Lake-town's destruction, enabling Bard to kill the dragon.[2]

In adaptations[]

A thrush appears at the end of the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), flying towards the Lonely Mountain. It begins tapping a snail shell against the side of the mountain, and the echoing of the tapping is heard all the way into the treasure room, causing Smaug to awaken.

The thrush is seen again outside of the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug during the Side-door's opening.
